You may have heard of tree sloths: small, adorable, and very slow critters that live in the jungle canopies of Central and South America. However, did you know they had gigantic relatives that once roamed the San Francisco Bay Area? Giant ground sloths, which were important herbivores, are completely extinct. The effects of their disappearance are still being felt today. To commemorate the installation of a new and life-sized ground sloth statue, staff paleontologist Gaetano Palazzo will be giving a lecture about the evolution and extinction of ground sloths at the Children's Natural History Museum. After the presentation, guests can see and feel real sloth fossils and stick around for a Q&A. This is a scientific lecture and will be geared towards adults, but kids (middle school and up) are welcome to join and learn about these incredible creatures that once roamed Fremont.
