    Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide services and programs promoting human welfare.  The inception of Delta Sigma Theta was to promote sisterhood, scholarship, and service.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1913 at Howard University in Washington, DC.

     

    The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust that consist of the following:

     

    Economic Development

    Educational Development

    International Awareness and Involvement

    Physical and Mental Health

    Political Awareness and Involvement

     

    Each year Delta membership supports an array of public services through its programs and awards of scholarships.  This is a significant part of our Educational Development Thrust.  The Smithfield Alumnae Chapter awards scholarships annually to high school seniors in our service area.

     

    Please follow these guidelines for application submission:

     

     - Review the application carefully before completing it.

    - A required photo must be attached to the application.

    - A copy of the student’s official transcript must show class rank and GPA.

    -  GPA must be 3.0 or higher.

    - Applications received after April 5, 2026 will not be considered.

  • GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Must be a high school senior residing in Isle of Wight County or Surry County attending Smithfield High School, Surry County High School, or Windsor High School.

    2. Have an overall GPA of B/3.0.

    3. Have been accepted as a full-time student at an accredited college or university. College acceptance letter must be included.

    4. Submit a typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font , 300-word essay (see instructions below).

    5. Submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal on school letterhead and must be signed by the recommender.  

    6. Submit one (1) letter confirming your community service on official letterhead.  Include your duties performed, length of service (i.e. dates, number of hours), and a signature affirming the authenticity of your service.  Community service logs will not be accepted.

    7. Submit an official high school transcript.

    8. Complete the entire application. Any omissions will eliminate the applicant for consideration.

    9. Recipients and their parents are required to attend an informational session as well as the Scholarship Tea. You will be notified of the date, time, and place.

    10. The sorority will pay all scholarship awards upon confirmation of college or university enrollment verification.

    11. All awards are given for one school year only in the amount of $1500.
