BSBA online courses are a fundamentally different teaching and learning experience than that to which many students are accustomed. This different experience is due to several factors, including:
1. Courses Delivered in a Highly Accelerated & Compressed Format
- BSBA online courses are delivered in a highly accelerated, 7-week format. A fast rate of learning is required.
- Courses concentrate the amount of content found in a typical 16-week semester into 7 weeks.
- Weekly workload is significantly more than a traditional course. Students should plan for 15-18 hours of work each week.
- Students can expect weekly assignments, both mid-week and end-of-week due dates, with little-to-no flexibility for late work or schedule accommodations.
2. 100% Asynchronous Course
- BSBA online courses are delivered in a 100% asynchronous format, which means there are no scheduled real-time/live meeting times or scheduled live interaction with faculty. All interactions in courses (e.g., student-faculty, student-student) occur through computer-mediated technology (e.g., Blackboard Ultra, e-mail).
- BSBA online courses have a very strong emphasis and reliance on directed (individual) learning, opposed to a traditional real-time faculty-student interaction and/or student-student interactions/projects.
3. Less Interaction with the Professor Than Traditional Courses
- BSBA online courses utilize Virtual Assistants (VAs). VAs are an important part of the teaching team, serving as the first, and often primary, point of communication. This can be a significant adjustment for students, particularly those who have attended YSU as an undergraduate or are part of a smaller graduate program.
4. Strict Adherence to the Syllabus
- Deadlines, due dates, etc. will be strictly adhered to. Any accommodation must be approved by the YSU Dean of Students (NOT the instructor).
