We have permission from DCJS to host the classroom and lecture portions at our Newburgh training center. Class will be split between there and Master Class in Monroe for hands on demonstration and live-fire.
This is a 47 hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a special armed guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. To attend the course students must possess a valid pistol license pursuant to NY Penal Law Section 400.00 and a valid NYS security guard registration card. The course consists of 7 hours of NYS Penal Law Article 35 (Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force) and 40 hours of range instruction and qualification. To successfully complete the course the student must pass a written examination on Article 35 and qualify with a handgun.

Students must bring the following to participate in this course:
- Social Security card AND driver’s license AND
- One of the following:
- Valid NYS pistol permit
- LEOSA credentials
- Contingent letter of need from the police agency processing your pistol permit
🎒 Required Equipment
Students must report with duty‑appropriate gear, including:
- Pen and notepad
- Baseball‑style hat
- Proper and comfortable footwear (boots you should have already)
- Proper and comfortable clothing (no shorts. NO underwear)
- Deep dark / blacked‑out sunglasses
- Duty‑type firearm
- Duty‑style hip holster (outside‑the‑waistband)
- Duty belt with belt keepers
- Duty‑type flashlight with holder
- Minimum of 3 magazines
- Duty‑style magazine holders that attach to your duty belt
- Wrap around style eye protection and ear protection (product recommendations provided in class)
- Recommended 1000 rounds of ammunition (Minimum 750 required)
- Do not bring all 750 rounds to every session; the instructor will advise how much to bring for each range day
- Water and snacks (especially if you have sugar‑related needs)
⚠️ Special Considerations
- Must be 21 years of age with a pistol permit and a NYS unarmed security guard license.
- Active police officers or retired officers (within 10 years) may take this course or contact DCJS regarding a waiver or exemption.
- “Duty‑type firearm” is defined as: Semi‑automatic pistols, 9mm or larger, with a magazine capacity of 7+ rounds, or Double‑action revolvers, .38 Special or larger, with a capacity of 5+ rounds
- You must complete the course with the firearm you intend to carry for work. Confirm employer‑specific requirements beforehand.
- You may qualify with multiple firearms; additional qualification fees apply per firearm.
- Duty‑type firearms only. No snub‑nose revolvers, subcompacts, dart guns, blow guns, airsoft, paintball, simunitions, laser guns, or “Dirty Harry”‑style firearms.
- No thigh rigs; low‑ride holsters are acceptable.
- If you own a ballistic vest, bring it on range days.
- Attendance is required for all training days. No exceptions.
- Unsafe firearm handling or failure to follow instructions will result in immediate dismissal from the course.
- Rifle and shotgun qualification is available for an additional fee (paid in person at our school). If you add this on, you will need to buy 25 rounds of 12 gauge slug / target load ammo and 50 rounds of .223.
- REFUND POLICY For THIS 47 Hour Course: Students will receive an 85% refund if cancellation occurs after the initial deadly physical force training begins (day 1), but before instruction begins for the firearms handling and qualification component of the course. No refund is owed if the student cancels after the above cited firearms handling component instruction has begun.
