Clone of SMC Award Application 2025
  • Spring Merit and Character (SMC) Award Application

By submitting a SMC Award application, current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be considered for the following scholarships, each with their own unique criteria. Depending on the award, the information our scholarship committees take into account include grade level, GPA, participation in co-curriculars, financial need, character traits, and/or engagement in community service. Scholarship committees may include faculty, staff, and/or friends of Brebeuf Jesuit who established these awards in honor of their loved ones. Once the application deadline passes, our scholarship committees begin carefully sorting through all of the student applicants. Award recipients are announced towards the end of each school year.

  • James Foxworthy '18 Memorial Scholarship

James Foxworthy '18 was a devoted son, brother, uncle, teammate, and friend who moved through the world with an open heart and an instinct for bringing people together. He loved deeply—his family most of all—and that love naturally spilled outward, making everyone around him feel welcome and included.

Whether on the lacrosse field at Brebeuf, at DePauw as a proud member of ATO, or surrounded by friends at the lake, James had a quiet gift for creating belonging. He noticed people. He invited them in. He made space—pulling up a chair, adding one more seat in the car, making sure no one was left on the sidelines. Being with James felt easy, like you were exactly where you were meant to be.

James found joy in shared moments: golfing, summers at Lake Maxinkuckee, traveling with his family to his beloved Dominican Republic, and cheering at countless sporting events. Some of his happiest moments were the simplest ones—driving cousins around the lake, making his nieces and nephews laugh, or gathering friends just to be together. He showed care not through grand gestures, but through presence, humor, and an unmistakable warmth that put smiles on faces.

He was especially close to his parents, deeply loyal and loving, and took real pride in caring for those entrusted to him. James lived fully and generously, leaving people lighter, happier, and more connected simply because he had been there. His joy created community—and that sense of belonging is part of his lasting gift.
