  • Physical Demands of the Prep Cook Job

Working in a commercial kitchen is physically demanding. It requires standing for long periods, often 8 hours per shift. Lifting up to 50 pounds, including pots, pans, and food supplies is common. Bending, stooping, and reaching frequently while prepping, cleaning, or retrieving items can be expected. You should plan on performing repetitive movements like chopping, stirring, and plating. The environment can be warm, especially near stoves and ovens, or cold when retrieving items from walk-in refrigerators or freezers. This role requires a sense of urgency and moving quickly between kitchen stations and storage areas. It will require you to hands and fingers with precision for tasks like slicing and assembling dishes. It is also important that you maintain awareness of safety, using sharp tools and hot equipment carefully.
