  • OUR HISTORY

Phi Beta Sigma, Incorporated (ΦΒΣ) was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914 by three young African-American male students. The founders A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

    THE PROGRAM

The Gamma Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated proudly offers the James “Chief” Wilson Scholarship to graduating high school seniors pursuing degrees in the Arts, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Music, Creative Media, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Digital Arts, or other creative disciplines.

    THE SCHOLARSHIP

James W. “Chief” Wilson was a transformative educator, musician, and community leader whose legacy continues to resonate throughout Central Florida. As the longtime band director at Jones High School in Orlando, he built an award-winning music program during segregation, using discipline, mentorship, and artistic excellence to expand opportunity for his students. Under his leadership, the Jones High School band performed at nationally recognized events, including the 1964 New York World’s Fair and the 1982 Knoxville World’s Fair, elevating both the school and the broader community through the power of music.

Beyond the band room, Chief Wilson was deeply committed to education, youth development, and civic engagement. He believed the arts were a gateway to confidence, scholarship, and leadership. Even after retirement, he continued mentoring generations of students and alumni, reinforcing his lifelong dedication to service and community advancement.

Chief Wilson was also a proud founding member of the Orlando alumni chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he embodied the fraternity’s principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. In his honor, the James “Chief” Wilson Scholarship & Community Service Golf Tournament was established to continue his mission of educational access and community uplift. Proceeds from the annual tournament directly fund scholarships for deserving students, ensuring that his legacy of mentorship, excellence, and service lives on through future leaders.
