Paper Alchemy is a 4-module online collage course via Zoom by @canson_city Each class is designed to explore different techniques, materials, and artistic approaches. No prior experience is needed—just your curiosity and creative spirit.
Module Breakdown
Class 1 (March 24th) : The Origins of Collage & Blade Mastery
We’ll kick off with a lecture on the history of collage—how it emerged, its key figures, and the variety of techniques within the art form. Then, I’ll guide you through precise blade techniques to create rings, circles, and intricate fretwork. We’ll wrap up by making a step-by-step collage together.
Class 2 (March 31th) : Cardstock Magic
In this session, we’ll dive deep into cardstock as a material. I’ll teach you how to replicate any object or character using just cardstock—no magazines involved. We’ll focus on paper art techniques to bring your creations to life in bold, new ways.
Class 3 (April 7th) : Collage in a Box—Exploring Depth
We’ll shift to three-dimensional collage by creating a layered piece inside a small box (like a soap or noodles box). This exercise will help you master composition, layering, and depth. The class includes a lecture on the history of collage as a political weapon.
Class 4 (April 14th): The Same, Yet Different—A Collective Experiment
For our final class, I’ll provide the same set of images to everyone. Each student will create a unique composition using only these materials. This exercise will showcase how diverse artistic paths can emerge from the same starting point, emphasizing the power of individual expression.
