Striving to Meet Achievement in Reading Together
  •

     Idaho SMART Project Overview

Idaho SMART (Striving to Meet Achievement in Reading Together) is a statewide professional learning initiative designed to strengthen literacy instruction and improve reading outcomes for Idaho’s K–3 students. Grounded in the Science of Reading, Idaho SMART focuses on building the knowledge, evidence-based instructional practices, and school systems needed to ensure students learn to read proficiently.

The project is designed to build both instructional capacity and sustainable literacy systems within schools and across districts. Through professional learning, coaching, and collaboration, participants strengthen the practices and structures that support strong reading instruction and improve student outcomes.

Idaho SMART is organized around three interconnected pathways. Each pathway focuses on the knowledge and practices essential to that role while working together to support effective literacy instruction across schools and districts.

Educator/Instructional Staff Pathway - Participants deepen their understanding of how children learn to read and how effective literacy instruction supports that development. Through professional learning, coaching, and collaboration, educators apply evidence-based literacy practices that support student reading success.

Building Coach Pathway - Participants learn how to support teachers in implementing evidence-based literacy instruction and to guide data-based decision-making at the classroom, grade-level, and school levels. Through professional learning and collaboration, coaches develop the skills needed to work alongside teachers, analyze student data, and support instructional decisions that improve reading outcomes.

    Administrator Pathway
Participants deepen their understanding of the Science of Reading and the leadership practices needed to support effective literacy instruction. Through professional learning and collaboration, administrators learn to evaluate literacy instruction, use assessment and student data to guide schoolwide decision-making, and establish the systems and structures needed to support and sustain effective reading instruction across their school.
