    Submission deadline MONDAY APRIL 20, 2026. Browse 2024 Summit breakout sessions here. Grow Smart RI will make program selections and notify all applicants by May 4, 2026. The 2026 Power of Place Summit will be held at the Rhode Island School of Design on June 26, 2026.

    Grow Smart RI is excited to invite you to apply to host a breakout session reflective of our shared smart growth values, that explores one or more of the topics listed below. 

    All sessions are intended to accomodate time for audience participation and discussion, and special priority will be given to those applications that center interactive or participatory activities. Using case studies or examples of specific projects is encouraged. The Summit will feature up to twelve (12) 75-minute breakout sessions in two blocks. Meeting rooms will be equipped with laptops, projectors and screens.

    Describe session topic, including its relevance to smart growth principles* and learning objectives. 
  • PRINCIPLES OF SMART GROWTH:

    1) Build connected communities (locate the things people need close to where they live)
    2) Make transportation accessible (Build a safe transportation system that connects people to jobs and other needs, whether they drive, take transit, walk, or bike.)
    3) Build for everyone (Make sure people can afford to live in smart growth communities at all stages of life.)
    4) Center community voice (Give people a say in what is built in their own neighborhoods.)
    5) Invest in Main Streets (Focus development in existing communities with a strong sense of place.)

      Through a longstanding association with the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Planning Association and the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, workshops may be eligible for CM and AIA credits (this is not guaranteed, but we will look into the possibility).
