As the global energy landscape evolves, breakthroughs in energy storage, alternative fuels, and infrastructure offer promising pathways to strengthen domestic energy systems in both the near and long term. Yet a critical question remains: how much of this innovation moves beyond academic journals and into real-world impact?

The Laboratory to Launchpad Conference at Johns Hopkins University will explore the gap between discovery and deployment, offering insights into how research can move from the lab into industry—and how attendees can bring their work to market.

Researchers bring strong technical expertise and sometimes receive training in grant writing, public speaking, project management, and mentorship. But what comes next? When is the right time to protect intellectual property? What does it mean to license a technology? What does it take to spin off a company? And how can researchers effectively communicate and position their work to drive meaningful change beyond academia?

This one-day conference will not only spark dialogue on the commercialization of energy technologies but also equip attendees with practical tools and strategies to translate their research into actionable outcomes.

The event will be followed by a networking reception from 4:30 - 6:00 pm ET.

The Laboratory to Launchpad Conference is supported by a Nexus Convening Grant from the Johns Hopkins University Provost’s Office and co-sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

  • As part of the conference, participants will have the opportunity to present a pitch to a broader audience, including a panel of judges from venture capital firms in the DMV area. To participate, you will need to prepare a five-minute, nontechnical presentation that highlights the work you are doing, the impact your research is having or could have, and the potential markets or applications for your work. The pitch should be framed as a business-oriented presentation rather than a scientific talk. If you indicate interest, we will follow up with additional details in the coming weeks. Would you like to participate in the pitch session?*
