  • Pepin Family Foundation is a family-led nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life throughout the Tampa Bay region. Its work focuses on education, health care, mental health wellness, transportation initiatives, and direct community support. The organization’s philanthropic activities began in the 1980s through the involvement of the Pepin family and were later formally structured as Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. Since its establishment, the foundation has continued to support initiatives that address practical needs within the community.

    Historical Origins and Family Legacy

The development of the Pepin Family Foundation is closely tied to the personal experiences and values of the Pepin family. Long before the organization was formally established, Art and Polly Pepin were already involved in charitable activities throughout the Tampa Bay area. Their early participation in community initiatives reflected a commitment to supporting organizations that provided meaningful services to residents.

In the late 1980s, a significant health event within the Pepin family heightened awareness of heart health and the need for improved medical access. This experience highlighted the importance of specialized cardiovascular care and encouraged the family to remain involved in efforts that strengthened cardiac services within the region. Their response gradually expanded beyond personal concerns and began to influence broader community support for health-related programs.

Tom Pepin worked alongside his parents and helped organize the family’s charitable efforts into a more structured approach. One of the earliest initiatives involved the creation of a memorial fund honoring Tom Pepin’s close friend, Chris Fredo. The fund began as a tribute but gradually expanded as the family became aware of additional community needs. Over time, the effort grew into the philanthropic organization now known as the Pepin Family Foundation.

    Mission, Vision, and Core Principles

The Pepin Family Foundation operates with a mission to support education, health care, transportation initiatives, and mental health and wellness services. These programs often prioritize individuals working in front-line roles, including professionals involved in emergency services, public safety, and health care.

Its vision includes expanding access to specialized education for individuals with learning disabilities, supporting progress in cardiac care and research, and ensuring that mental health and wellness services remain available for first responders and their families.

    Organizational Structure and Operations

Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. functions within the nonprofit and philanthropic sector with a focused internal structure. While the organization employs a small staff, its activities extend through partnerships with hospitals, schools, public safety agencies, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Tampa Bay region.

The foundation’s operational approach emphasizes cooperation and active participation. Members of the family are involved in governance and maintain relationships with organizations that work alongside the foundation to support community initiatives.

    Leadership and Governance

Leadership within the Pepin Family Foundation reflects a multi-generational structure. Tom Pepin serves as the founder and remains involved in the organization’s work. His long-standing presence in the Tampa Bay community contributes to the foundation’s understanding of local needs and effective approaches to community support.

The family also expanded its governance structure by establishing the Pepin Family Office. This office assists with managing philanthropic activities and reviewing organizations that align with the family’s priorities for long-term impact and responsible stewardship. Former Senate President Tom Lee manages the office.

Tina Pepin serves as Executive Director and represents the next generation of leadership within the organization. Her role includes overseeing daily operations, maintaining alignment with the foundation’s mission, and guiding responsible development. In addition to her responsibilities at the foundation, Tina Pepin participates in several community boards and advisory groups.

She also serves as secretary for the Pepin Academies Foundation and participates on the AdventHealth West Florida Division Mental Health Advisory Committee and Tampa’s Cultural Assets Commission.

Advancing Heart Health and Medical Care

Heart health has remained a significant focus of the Pepin Family Foundation since its early years. In 1986, Tom Pepin and Arthur Pepin made matching pledges totaling $500,000 to support the development of a specialized cardiac facility. This support helped establish the Pepin Heart Hospital and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute.

Today, the Pepin Heart Hospital is recognized for its advanced cardiovascular services and is regarded as one of the leading specialty digital hospitals in the Southeast.

    Education and Individualized Learning Initiatives

Education remains an important area of focus for the foundation. In 1999, Pepin Academies was created to serve students with learning disabilities who required a more individualized educational environment. The program began with 13 students and was designed to provide both academic instruction and life skills development.

Pepin Academies operates as a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school serving students from third through twelfth grade. The program also includes a transitional job-training initiative for young adults ages 18 to 22. Over time, the school expanded significantly and now serves more than 1,200 students while graduating over 850 individuals.

    Mental Health and Resiliency Programs

As awareness of mental health challenges has increased, the Pepin Family Foundation has expanded its efforts in mental health wellness and resiliency. These initiatives focus particularly on individuals working in demanding professions, including health care workers, law enforcement officers, and emergency responders.

    Community Giving and Strategic Partnerships

Beyond its main program areas, the Pepin Family Foundation supports a wide range of community initiatives. The foundation collaborates with hospitals, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and public safety agencies to support community development across the Tampa Bay region.

Organizations supported by the foundation include AdventHealth Tampa’s Pepin Heart Hospital, Pepin Academies, the Chiefs of Police Foundation, the Tampa Police Department and RISE Tampa, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Moffitt Cancer Center, the Crisis Center and 211 Hope Line, Arise Alliance, Able Trust, Hands Across the Bay, Hook A Hero, Leadership Tampa Bay, the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and the Women’s Conference of Florida.

    Recognition and Community Impact

The Pepin Family Foundation has been serving the Tampa Bay community since the 1980s and has received recognition for its sustained contributions. Among the honors it has received is the RCG Community Impact Award, which recognizes organizations that strengthen the region through consistent engagement. Through ongoing partnerships and thoughtful giving, the Pepin Family Foundation continues to support programs that benefit individuals and families across the Tampa Bay area.
