Lecture - If I Knew Then What I Know Now... a runner's handbook, Dr Gavin Spickett (1974)

1.30pm:  A major hobby has been running, starting when I was 40 and getting decidedly overweight. It was a struggle to start with, but one of my staff at work was the daughter of the Secretary of the Tynedale Harriers & Athletic Club.  One day, not long after I had started running, she came into my office and put the entry form for the Great North Run on my desk and said: ”I have done it so you can!”.  I have continued to run ever since (now over 70) and train regularly.  I have competed in races of all distances, including ultramarathons (2, celebrating 60th and 70th birthdays!).  I have trained as a Fitness instructor and have an interest in sports medicine (mainly in the setting of athletes with persistent fatigue).  Along the way there have been many lessons learned the hard way and so I decided to put it down on paper and this was published in 2023 by The Crowood Press.  The book is aimed at beginners and those who want to progress.  It covers clothing and equipment selection, especially shoes, how to train and how to prepare for races and recover afterwards.  Guidance on injuries and health problems that may arise is covered.
