    Application Guidelines
  • Purpose:

    The purpose of the Theresa D. Jefferson Legacy Award is to assist applicants with personal cost they may have during the research phase of their dissertation. Applicants must be Black male doctoral candidates currently in or immediately approaching the dissertation research phase. This award helps scholars with expenses that occur AFTER they have received the Theresa D. Jefferson Legacy Award. Funds may be used only on research related expenses. Examples include but are not limited to: data analysis software, copying cost, consumable items (e.g. nitrile gloves), transcription services, data collection equipment. 

    Who is eligible?:

    Black male doctoral candidates currently in or immediately approaching the dissertation phase. Applicants can be from any discipline, however dissertations that include one or several of the following topics are preferred:

    • Focus on Black men or Black boys 
    • Focus on education (i.e. K-12 or Higher Education) 
    • Focus on first generation students 
    • Focus on diverse student populations

    Amount Available: 

    The maximum amount awarded to an individual is $500.00.

    How to apply:

    The proposal must address the following areas via these headings:

    1. Background – A brief statement of the problem, previous literature, and explanation of the proposed research.
    2. Purpose/hypothesis – A clear explanation of the purpose of the proposed study. Ideally, the proposed study will address gaps in previous research as outlined in the Background section.
    3. Methods – A clear description of the research design, participants, and methodology that will be employed for the proposed study.
    4. Budget – A table outlining the costs associated with the proposed study. Only funds for direct costs or travel associated with the study can be requested (e.g., participant re-imbursement, equipment purchase, travel to a conference to present results). If the grant amount does not cover all study expenses, pleased indicate whether other funds are available to make the study implementation feasible.
    5. References – A list of references used in the proposal should be included.

    If a project is awarded funding, the student must sign the Theresa D. Jefferson Legacy Award Agreement before funding will be disbursed. In that document the student will:

     1. Agree to file a follow-up report, one year after funding is awarded.

    2. Agree to present a webinar for the Jefferson Family Foundation within a year of receiving the Theresa D. Jefferson Legacy Award. 

    3. Agree to include this acknowledgement statement in all manuscripts, presentations, or public use of the project results: “This project was supported via the Jefferson Family Foundation.”
