Global Gardens Chicago, located in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood at 4815 N. Sacramento Ave., seeks a seasonal Farm Assistant for the 2026 growing season to work farmers markets with our refugee families. This position runs from June 3rd-October 25th, 2026 (with training on May 21st and May 27th from 3-7 PM, both days. There is flexibility in the dates of the training) and pays $19/hr. The assistant will work closely with the Executive Director and the Development and Programs Manager at 25-28 hours per week.
The hours are:
Wednesdays from 1:30-7:30 PM (pack up, working, and tear down for the Andersonville Farmers Market)
Thursdays from 1:30-7:30 PM (pack up, working, and tear down for the Lincoln Square Farmers Market)
Saturdays from 8:00-1:30 PM (pack up, working, and tear down for the Horner Park Farmers Market and deliveries)
1st & 3rd Sundays from 8:30-2:30 PM, and 2nd & 4th Sundays from 8:00-1:30 PM (pack up, working, and tear down for the Portage Park Farmers Market or the Independence Park Farmers Market)
There are miscellaneous duties such as data entry (done when it's convenient for you) and occasional farm cleanup that will also fill the hours.
Essential Duties & Requirements
- Works four farmers markets per week from June-October on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The assistant is responsible for driving farmers and vegetables to and from the market, setting up the booth, assisting market farmers in selling produce to customers, and answering customer questions about our products and our organization's mission
- Handles cash and credit card transactions at each market, records cash sales data during market, and pays farmers at the end
- Keeps market supplies stocked (paper bags, business cards, etc)
- Inputs farmers market sales data into Google sheets
- Assists in other errands as assigned
- Occasionally helps keep farm facilities such as vegetable washing station, produce cooler, and other common areas clean and organized
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelors degree preferred
- Valid driver’s license
- Comfortable driving our large farm van (Dodge Caravan) in urban environments
- Willing to work on weekends and outdoors in rain or heat
- English fluency
- Friendly demeanor and comfortable interacting with the public/answering customer questions
- Experience interacting with different cultures preferred
- Agricultural experience or vegetable knowledge preferred
- Comfortable doing basic Google sheets data entry
