The specialty of Psychological Assessment denotes a level of practice requiring preparation beyond doctoral requirements. The postdoctoral requirements include, at a minimum, 3 years of practice (which can include direct services, research, teaching, test development, etc.) in psychological assessment and 40 continuing education hours specifically in psychological assessment or adjacent topics. These 3 years may be structured in different ways:
A. One year of postdoctoral supervision in a successfully completed formal postdoctoral training program in an area of health service psychology, with a clear emphasis on psychological assessment, that is accredited by the APA or CPA or from an APPIC member program, followed by at least 2 years of continued practice (which does not require supervision or consultation). As part of continued practice, psychologists must accrue at least 40 hours of continuing education credits specifically on psychological assessment or adjacent topics prior to being eligible for ABPA.
OR
B. Two years of supervised (or if post-licensure, formal consultation with a licensed psychologist) postdoctoral practice experience consistent with that ordinarily associated with an area of health service psychology, with a clear emphasis on psychological assessment, followed by at least a year of continued practice. The 2 years must include a minimum of one hour per week of individual supervision or, if post-licensure, 1 hour per week of individual consultation with a licensed psychologist. Supervision/consultation may be obtained face-to-face or utilizing synchronous audio/visual telecommunication. The additional 1 year (12 months) of postdoctoral practice may or may not be supervised or have provided consultation. It is not required that the 24 months of postdoctoral practice and/or 12 months of postdoctoral supervision/consultation be consecutive months. As part of continued practice, psychologists must accrue at least 40 hours of continuing education credits specifically on psychological assessment or adjacent topics prior to being eligible for ABPA.
