Knowledge of the Retail Automotive Sector – Understanding of the business of trading in motor vehicles, including the unique aspects of new vehicle sales, used vehicle transactions, and leasing practices. This includes knowledge of manufacturer relationships, marketing strategies, vehicle appraisals, acquisitions, refurbishing, disclosure requirements, and the fundamentals of leasing.
Board Membership/Governance – Understanding of the role of boards, the responsibilities of directors and officers, principles of good governance, and the relationship with the Chief Executive Officer, including the distinction between oversight and management. Board experience in a not-for-profit environment is particularly valuable, as it often reflects service in support of a public or community interest rather than shareholders.
Consumer Protection/Advocacy - An understanding of provincial consumer laws, the economic importance of consumer confidence, and the role of consumer advocacy in effecting positive change, including an appreciation for collaborative, non-adversarial approaches to problem solving in the public interest.
Public Policy – Familiarity with the development of public policy, including the roles of elected officials and the public service, the need to balance the interests of diverse stakeholders, and the importance of consultation.
Legal/Regulatory – Familiarity with the role of a marketplace regulator, the scope and limitations of regulatory authority, due process, the rights of an accused, and the legal and societal reasons why enforcement powers are appropriately constrained. This includes an understanding of the legal process and the options available to law administrators.
Customer Service Delivery – Business – An understanding of the role of business in the marketplace and how to manage a business enterprise, including providing goods and services to customers, adding value, making a fair profit.
Customer Service Delivery – Government – An understanding of how government operates, the services it provides, and the challenges of delivering those services in a fiscally constrained and by necessity, bureaucratic environment.
Customer Service Delivery – Customer Service – An understanding of how to establish and assess appropriate service levels in an environment where service must be balanced with cost, due diligence, and risk mitigation.
Financial Literacy – Understanding of financial statements and auditor’s reports, including the ability to assess fiscal health, identify variances and trends, recognize anomalies, and to ask pertinent questions.
Marketing – An understanding of marketing concepts sufficient to assess plans proposed by staff and authorized consultants.
Public Relations – An understanding of the importance of maintaining sound relationships with diverse client and stakeholder groups, including government, industry, consumers, media, and partners.
Communications – An understanding of how to communicate sometimes complex messages clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
Executive Management – Experience in overseeing, coaching, and providing guidance to an executive level position, including setting goals and objectives and measuring success in delivering those goals.
Human Resources/Compensation – Awareness of various approaches to determining compensation levels for executive-level positions, including salary, bonus, benefits and pensions, perquisites, and career planning and development.
Technical Training – Familiarity with the components of effective training programs, including relevance, appropriate level, testing, and accessibility.
Public Education – Familiarity with components of effective public education and communications programs for a diverse public audience.
Risk Management and Analysis – The ability to identify and assess risk in a regulatory environment and to evaluate the effectiveness and reasonableness of staff proposed mitigation strategies.
Strategic Planning – The ability to view an organization and its objectives from a high-level, long-term perspective and to identify strategies that support the achievement of those objectives.
IT Governance – Knowledge or awareness of IT governance, including cyber security, privacy, social media engagement, reputation management, oversight of IT projects, as well as an understanding how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, may impact organizations and consumers.
