A vital element of the period of service is the transformation it affects in the volunteer. This period is an opportunity to develop new habits, test preconceived ideas, develop an attitude of learning, strengthen one’s spiritual health and experience the power of worship and service together. It is a moment where youth have the opportunity to seek excellence and strive to exemplify the high standard of Bahá'í life.
In order to achieve all of the above, it is essential to have standards that experience has shown will help in the efforts that a young person is making and protect him/her from powerful negative influences and forces which will dilute the impact of transformation or serve as a distraction.
Youth must strive to maintain an attitude of service at all times, whether during activities, family life or study.
The period of service is intended to be a time of great intensity and short duration. Taking advantage of every moment is important. Developing the quality of punctuality and order is essential to make the most of experience.
The weekly pattern of activities should be shared with your mentors (both those representing the LSA and in the field) and should include at least 1 educational activity which is prioritised and nurtured on a weekly basis. In the exceptional circumstances that sessions need to be missed for health or other reasons, the collaborators working to support the activity alongside the youth should be informed in advance.
The summertime rhythm of cluster-wide gatherings/seminars, intensive trainings and conferences are vital elements of transformation during your period of service and are an essential part of the calendar.
Youth on a period of service are a powerful example for other youth and junior youth in the cluster. Seeking excellence and exemplifying chastity in all interactions, clothing and language serve as a powerful influence. Youth should strive to find coherence in all their relationships as a priority.
