    Job Title:   Library Technician II (Part-Time)

    Department:  Children's Department

    FLSA-Status:  Non-Exempt

    Salary Range: $18.00 an hour.

    LIBRARY SUMMARY

    • The mission of the Homewood Public Library is to bring people, information, and ideas together to enrich lives, build community, and inspire lifelong learning.
    • The Homewood Public Library is located just south of Birmingham, Alabama. The Library serves a community of almost 28,000 residents but is also a member of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative, so all residents of Jefferson County can use this facility.
    • The award-winning Homewood Public Library has consistently been rated one of the top libraries in the state of Alabama.
    • This 53,000-square-foot facility has two auditoriums, eight meeting rooms, and six study rooms. It is open 67 hours per week and has 25 full-time employees and 30 part-time employees.
    • The Homewood Public Library is a well-funded library with an annual budget of just over $3 million dollars.
    • The Homewood Library Foundation and the Friends of the Homewood Library are both very active support groups of the Homewood Public Library.

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Library Technician II in Children’s Services will work with a dedicated team that is committed to fostering excellent customer service relationships within the community. The Children’s Services Department consists of 5 full-time employees and 7 part-time employees.

    • Leads in customer service and has the ability to efficiently, effectively, and positively meet the Library’s needs of internal and external users.
    • Sets and models high performance standards characterized by integrity, and to earn trust and respect of others by coaching, inspiring, and empowering teams of people to achieve strategic objectives.
    • Understands and supports the Library’s role in providing free and equal access to ideas, information, resources, and services from all points of view to every individual.
    • Plans and implements programming that supports the Library’s mission and the evolving needs of the community.
    • Actively engages in outreach efforts, forms partnerships with local organizations, and other initiatives that bolster the Library’s mission.
    • Assists patrons with departmental information, materials, and services.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Department Operations

    • Works scheduled times at the Children’s Services desk and participates in other daily tasks within the Children’s Services Department.
    • Plans, presents, and evaluates creative and innovative storytimes for various ages and abilities, based on knowledge of developmental stages, best practices and community needs and interests, both inside and outside the library location.
    • Evaluates and weeds collection on an ongoing basis.
    • May serve on committees within the Library or with the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC).   
    • Assists with new staff, including onboarding training and cross training initiatives.
    • Assists with feeding and cleaning cages of library pets as needed.
    • Performs related tasks as assigned.

     Customer Service and Patron Assistance

    • Greets and offers assistance to all patrons in person or via phone.
    • Exemplifies Library’s standards of customer service and instills the understanding and importance of these standards to other staff.
    • Possesses the capabilities to de-escalate patron or employee situations in alignment with the Library’s procedures, policies, and values.
    • Promotes and supports the fundamental purposes of the public library.
    • Interacts appropriately, fairly, and equitably with all and demonstrates and fosters respect for all individuals in accordance with the Library’s values.
    • Assists patrons in locating materials, both in house and system wide, and placing holds as needed.
    • Develops and shares knowledge of popular materials, library services, and local resources.
    • Participates and coordinates Library outreach efforts, representation at local events, and acts as a liaison between the Library and other organizations.

    Conducts Professional Development Activities

    • Attends training seminars as required by the Library.
    • Participates in training to ensure compliance with Library policies.
    • Reads professional journals, books, and other materials for professional growth.

    PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

    Knowledge of: 

    • Best practices and current trends in Children's services, including guidelines and standards published by the American Library Association, Alabama Library Association, and other relevant organizations.
    • Dewey Decimal System, books, and authors.
    • the Internet and Windows systems.

    Skill To:

    • Manage time efficiently.
    • Communicate effectively with a variety of residents and City personnel using tact, courtesy, and good judgement.
    • Perform basic computer/keyboarding functions coupled with an understanding and knowledge of library provided equipment and softward including website, databases, catalog, and ILS>
    • Perform engaging and entertaining storytimes and programs for all ages.
    • Create graphics using library provided software. 

    Ability to:

    • Communicate, through written and verbal methods, including a willingness to seek clarification when needed.

    • Implement Library policies and procedures.

    • Represent the Library within the community to foster relationships and increase awareness of Library services and opportunities.

    • Maneuver among high and low shelves, bend and stoop, stand for long periods of time, and manipulate heavy objects up to fifty pounds.

    • Adapt to changing situations in a professional and responsible manner.
      Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work independently.

    • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, organizations, and patrons.

    • Perform job safely in accordance with library safety procedures.

    • Lead and motivate library staff and handle employee conflicts and disagreements while maintaining composure. 

    • Work collaboratively with others to achieve common and organizational goals and objectives.

    • Maintain confidential information.

    Credentials and Experience: 

    • Educational background equivalent to 2 years of college.
    • Two years’ library experience or other equivalent combinations of training and experience are acceptable.

    Special Requirements: 

    • Must be willing to undergo a criminal background check and drug test. 
    • Willing to travel as required. Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license.
    • Current contributors to the Employees’ Retirement System (ERS) are ineligible for part-time positions.

    Hours and Benefits: 

    $18.00 per hour. 19 hours per week including some nights and weekends. This position specifically includes the Tuesday closing shift until 9.15, Wednesday morning shift, and Friday closing shift until 6:15.
