Introduction to Rat Sports Workshop
Curious about rat scent sports like Barn Hunt and NASDA? This workshop is designed for dogs and handlers who are brand new to the sport and want to explore how dogs naturally hunt using their nose.
In this hands-on workshop, your dog will be introduced to two different rat sports: Barn Hunt and Urban Locating (NASDA).
During the workshop we will cover:
• A brief introduction to scent theory, including how odor moves and how dogs locate the source of scent
• Introduction to Barn Hunt rat tubes
• Building value and enthusiasm for the tube
• Helping dogs begin to discriminate between empty tubes and tubes containing rats
• Introduction to the Barn Hunt tunnel
• Opportunities for dogs to find rats in tubes
Dogs will also experience Urban Locating, a NASDA sport where rats are placed in quarry boxes rather than Barn Hunt tubes. These boxes are hidden in man-made environments such as around vehicles, sheds, debris piles, and other structures. Dogs learn to search these areas and use odor to locate the hidden quarry.
By the end of the workshop, you will come away with a solid understanding of how these rat sports work and which one may be the best fit for you and your dog.
This workshop is designed to be fun, informative, and beginner-friendly, while giving both dogs and handlers a clear introduction to rat scent sports.
No prior experience is required — just bring a curious dog ready to hunt.
