  • The Dr. Barbara Baton “For the Love of Children” Scholarship is for male or female college students currently attending a 2- or 4-year college/university pursuing any major of study. Applicants do not have to have an affiliation with NCNW. Dr. Baton was a true Educator who believed that all children –when given the opportunity and tools to be successful academically cannot do anything but achieve. This is a one-time scholarship for a student who would like to continue their college education.

    Instructions for the Application - Academic Year 2026-2027

    1.     Must be pursuing a post-secondary education and be a rising sophomore and above.

    2.     Must live or be from the Greater Harrisburg area.

    3.     Must have a 2.5 or above GPA.

    4.     Complete the Scholarship Application (DO NOT LEAVE ANY ITEMS BLANK).

    5.     The deadline for the scholarship application: May 29, 2026.

    6.     Applications received after May 29, 2026, will not be accepted.

    7.     Awardees will be notified by July 13, 2026

    8.     Awards will be distributed during the Fall semester 2026 (1/2 payment) and Spring semester 2027 (balance).

     

    The following items below MUST be submitted to be considered:

    1.     A complete Scholarship Application

    2.     An Official College Transcript (UPLOAD)

    3.     Two signed Letters of Recommendation from non-family relatives (UPLOAD)

    4.     Picture (Headshots only) (UPLOAD)

    5.     Written essay (UPLOAD)

  • *** SCHOLARSHIP PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS*** 

    Essay Topic: What plan would you propose to increase voter participation in your community?

    Directions: In an essay of no more than 500 words, applicants should demonstrate a personal connection to the issue of voter engagement or a strong awareness of it. Additionally, they should propose a plausible solution to enhance voter engagement and outline actionable steps that community residents can take to support this initiative.

    Essays should incorporate three distinct writing styles: Narrative, Descriptive, and Summary. 

    1. **Narrative**: 

    This section should not exceed 200 words and should provide reviewers with information about the applicant’s current course of study. Additionally, applicants should outline their future goals and aspirations, explaining how the Dr. Barber Baton scholarship can help them achieve these objectives. 

    2. **Descriptive**: 

    This section must also be limited to 200 words and should describe the applicant’s voter engagement project. Applicants should include critical details such as the targeted demographic, the project's location, and any supporting organizations involved.

    3. **Summary**: 

    In the final segment of the essay, applicants should summarize their voter engagement project and conclude by illustrating the connection between the proposed project and increased voter participation.
