**Volunteering with a disability
Are there volunteers with disabilities that help at the NNR?
Yes, we are proud to have a number of people with disabilities assisting with our activities.
What suitable vacancies are there?
Please complete the application form, stating the role(s) you are interested in and provide details of your disability and how you feel that might affect your ability to carry out the tasks involved.
There are significant hazards at an operational railway and naturally safety is our overriding priority. We will contact you to individually discuss which volunteer role(s) may be suitable for you. Whilst we will do our utmost to find a position for you, the range of suitable roles may be limited and occasionally it is not possible to find a safe role for a prospective volunteer. Please also be aware that there are limited departments for 16 & 17 year olds, the majority of roles are for those aged 18 or over.
Do I have to tell you about my disability?
Many of the volunteer roles at the railway are safety critical. This means that, where an individual’s ability to undertake a task may be compromised by a disability, it may result in a signifcant risk to the health and safety of the individual and others. We have a duty of care to you and to all of our vounteers, so you must disclose any disability on your application form.
I need a carer/supervior - can I volunteer?
If you need a carer or supervisor, you may still be able to volunteer within certain non-safety critical departments. You must provide your own nominated carer/supervisor, who must also become a volunteer and who must attend and work alongside you whenever you vounteer at the railway. The NNR is not able to provide a carer/supporter for you.
