  • EXPECTATIONS

    Volunteer Requirements

    *Minimum Age: 13 years old

    *Qualities Needed: Responsible and reliable- Energetic and enthusiastic- Patient and compassionate- Team-oriented and inclusive
    *You must be available to attend a minimum of 80% of our season sessions
    *Training: Mandatory session before the season begins

    Volunteer Roles
    *Work one-on-one with a participants
    *Assist with setting up and taking down equipment
    *Demonstrate basic soccer techniques
    *Encourage positive social interaction
    *Support coaches and staff during sessions
    *Ensure safety and fun for all participants

    Best Practices for Working with Children with Disabilities
    *Use clear, simple language
    *Be patient—allow extra time for responses or actions
    *Celebrate small successes
    *Model positive behavior
    *Avoid assumptions—ask if you're unsure how to help
    *Respect boundaries—physical and emotional
    *Stay calm—especially during meltdowns or emotional moments
    *No phones on the field/ No photos to be taken of any of the athletes
    *NEVER be alone with an athlete. 

    VOLUNTEER CODE OF CONDUCT 

    The Burlington Soccer Club (BSC) is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants in our Embracing Ability Program. As a volunteer, you play a vital role in creating a positive and empowering experience for our athletes. By joining our team, you agree to uphold the following Code of Conduct:


    1. Respect and Inclusion
    Treat all athletes, families, fellow volunteers, and staff with dignity and respect, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or background. Promote an inclusive environment where every participant feels safe, welcomed, and supported. Use positive and person-first language when referring to individuals with disabilities.


    2. Commitment to the Program
    Arrive on time and be prepared for each session. If you are unable to attend, notify the program coordinator as early as possible. Follow the direction of BSC staff and coaches to ensure consistency and safety in programming. Engage fully in your volunteer role and actively support athletes in their participation. You must be available to attend a min of 80% of all sessions.


    3. Communication and Conduct
    Communicate kindly, clearly, and respectfully with all athletes, families, and fellow volunteers. Avoid using inappropriate, offensive, or discriminatory language or gestures. Maintain appropriate physical boundaries and interactions at all times.


    4. Safety and Supervision
    Prioritize the safety and well-being of all athletes. Report any concerns, incidents, or injuries to a BSC staff member immediately. Never be alone with a participant in a private setting—always remain in sight of others. Follow all safety procedures, including emergency protocols, outlined by the BSC.


    5. Confidentiality
    Respect the privacy and confidentiality of athletes and their families. Do not share personal or medical information without permission. Avoid discussing participants outside of the program setting.


    6. Role Modeling
    Act as a positive role model both on and off the field. Demonstrate sportsmanship, teamwork, patience, and compassion at all times.
