When Tesla located its Gigafactory in Travis County, its CEO, Elon Musk publicly described plans for an “ecological paradise” along the Colorado River—a natural area that would benefit both wildlife and the surrounding community.
Years later, the promised eco-park has not materialized, despite the project receiving substantial public incentives and continued expansion along the river corridor.
The Colorado River is one of Central Texas’ most vital natural resources, supporting wildlife habitat, bird migration, water quality, and community recreation. Ensuring that environmental commitments tied to major developments are fulfilled is essential for maintaining public trust and protecting our shared environment.
We, the undersigned residents of Austin and Travis County, respectfully request that the Travis County Commissioners Court and relevant local officials:
- Require transparency and accountability regarding the promised Colorado River eco-park
- Seek clear, public updates on the status, timeline, and scope of ecological restoration commitments
- Verify whether meaningful progress has been made on the proposed park and habitat improvements
- Ensure that public incentives are tied to fulfillment of environmental commitments
Fulfilling this promise would:
- Protect and restore critical riverfront habitat
- Provide public access to green space along the Colorado River
- Support biodiversity and bird migration in our region
- Demonstrate that environmental commitments made to the community matter
We ask our local leaders to ensure that this commitment is honored and that the public receives clear answers and timely action.
