  • Summary Petition Statement:

We, the undersigned civil society organizations, health professionals, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities, call upon the United Nations Human Rights Council to recognize without delay the human right to a mutually healthy relationship between humans and nature. While U.N. Resolution 76/300 (2022), the recognition of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment was a landmark achievement, the escalating global crisis - characterized by accelerating climate change and unprecedented nature and biodiversity loss - proves that a passive right to any kind of "environment" is insufficient. Access to nature and healthy ecosystems in human habitats must be viewed as a human right rather than a "nice-to-have" amenity. A mutually healthy relationship with nature is critical to our collective health and societal functioning. When the right to access healthy nature and ecosystems is withheld, health and social benefits are withheld as well. Consistent access to the ways nature can keep us healthy and safe must not be reserved for only the wealthiest among us.
