Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven visionary educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, and Cubena McClure. Sigma Gamma Rho has remained dedicated to service, sisterhood, and uplifting communities through education and civic engagement for over a century. The sorority partners with respected national organizations such as the NAACP, NPHC, UNCF, March of Dimes, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Magnetic Mu Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter was chartered on June 28, 2017, in Tallahassee, Florida, by dedicated charter members committed to service and scholarship. The magnificent charter members were: Ivy A. Baker, Rosa James, Lauren White, Tabitha Washington, Princilla Brown-Jefferson, Annette A. Wilson, and Brandi Williams, along with Taihisha Alteme, Alexis Brailsford, and Jamila Ramseur-Nance. In August 2019, the Mu Mu Sigma C.A.R.E.S. Foundation, Inc. was launched as the philanthropic arm of the chapter, supporting educational advancement and community engagement. The Mu Mu Sigma Annual Scholarship is designed to assist graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue further education at a 2-year or 4-year college. The Mu Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter and the Mu Mu Sigma C.A.R.E.S. Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, sponsor this scholarship program.

The application portal will open on April 1, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. EST. All applications must be submitted by April 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Awardees will be announced on May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. EST. All required materials must be submitted with the application. No late applications will be accepted.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

• Must be a currently enrolled high school senior graduating in 2026 from
• Must seek to pursue higher education, whether it be a 4-year institution or a 2-year (technical/community) institution
• Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale)
• Must demonstrate traits of high personal character and leadership

In addition to the application found below, you must submit the required materials to complete your application. Please make sure that your application submission contains ALL of the items listed below:

1. Complete the scholarship application (found below).
2. Provide the completed Teacher Recommendation Form.
3. Provide a headshot with a signed copy of the Media Release Form.
4. Submit your unofficial transcripts.
5. Submit your academic resume highlighting your student activities, outside student activities, community engagement, honors or awards, and any relevant work experience (if applicable).
6. Complete and submit a typed essay, answering the following two prompts. DO NOT USE ANY AI TOOLS TO WRITE. We will be screening all essays for AI.  
   • Self-care and stress management are vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. Describe two activities you like to do when you need to recharge. It could be listening to music, doing your favorite hobby, or even playing games with friends. Why are these activities enjoyable for you? And how would you encourage others to take care of themselves? (350-word minimum, 450-word maximum)
   • The motto of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is “Greater Service, Greater Progress”. Describe two of your future academic or career goals and how this scholarship would help you progress towards them. (350-word minimum, 450-word maximum)

The Mu Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter Scholarship Committee shall consider the applicants' academic achievement, leadership qualities, essay content, extracurricular involvement, community involvement, and overall application. Scholarships shall be awarded objectively and non-discriminately, with no race, creed, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, or disability being considered. Selections are based on information received from the applicant and the additional materials postmarked by the deadline. The committee's decisions are final, and the committee will not disclose the justification for recipient selections under any circumstances. The following rubric will be used to help score your scholarship:

Scholarship recipients can attend any accredited public or private college, community college, or university in the United States. The institution must offer a standard curriculum and possess a faculty and student body.

I hereby grant the Mu Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Mu Mu Sigma C.A.R.E.S. Foundation, Inc., hereinafter referred to as "MMS," the absolute and irrevocable right and permission, in respect of the photographs and/or video taken of me alone or with others, to use, re-use, publish, and re-publish the same in whole or in part, individually or in conjunction with other photographs or video, and in conjunction with any printed matter, or electronic matter, in any media now or hereafter known, and for any purpose whatsoever; and to use my name in conjunction therewith if MMS so chooses.

I hereby release and discharge MMS from any claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of the photographs or video, including, without limitation, any claims for libel or invasion of privacy.

This authorization and release shall also benefit the heirs, legal representatives, licensees, and assigns of MMS.
