Bring your curiosity and sense of wonder as we explore the incredible wildlife that lives in and along the James River. This familyâfriendly event invites kids and adults to discover the riverâs ecosystems through hands-on activities, guided exploration, and closeâup encounters with the natural world.

What Families Will Experience:
- Short Introduction to Aquatic and Terrestrial species
- Guided riverside walk: Spotting signs of wildlifeâfrom great blue herons and river otters to turtles, mussels, and the tiny critters living beneath the waterâs surface.
- Interactive learning stations: Explore animal ID with Inaturalist, Seek, Merlin or traditional ID guides, and discover how different species survive and thrive in the James River watershed.
- Kidâfriendly demonstrations: Dip-netting for aquatic insects and a guess who activity featuring wildlife of the James!
- Conservation moments: Families will learn how the health of the river affects the animals that depend on it and how small actions can make a big difference.

What to Bring:
Comfortable shoes, water, and weatherâappropriate clothing. All activity materials will be provided. Please bring your cell phone if you would like to use any of the free ID apps from Inaturalist, Seek, or Merlin Bird ID.Â
