Menstrual Cycle & Insulin Sensitivity Tracker

  • Instructions:

  • If have a monthly cycle or in perimenopause and still cycling, this tracker can help you track blood sugar trends and insulin sensitivity throughout the month.

If you've already transitioned into menopause and reached one year without a cycle, you can skip this form.

    How to use this form:

    • Use it to identify patterns and make informed adjustments to your diabetes management plan. Even if your cycles are irregular, noting symptoms and trends can be insightful.
    • This form can be printed or filled out digitally and revisited monthly to detect patterns and refine management strategies, and discuss with your doctor.
    • Please always consult your doctor before changing your diet, insulin dosages or health care plan.

  • Understanding Your Hormonal Cycle

  • This graph shows hormone levels through the different stages of a normal 28-day cycle in a woman's reproductive years.

  • Image field 9
  • Follicular Phase (Days 1-14)

INSULIN SENSITIVITY is HIGHER in the follicular phase (pre-ovulation) when estrogen levels are highest and peak during ovulation.

  • Ovulation (Day 14)

As ovulation approaches, estrogen reaches its peak. For some women, insulin sensitivity is at its best here. For others, this phase brings sudden shifts—blood sugars may dip more easily or change quickly.

Ovulation is a hormonal pivot point, and the body can respond rapidly, sometimes within hours rather than days.

  • Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)

INSULIN SENSITIVITY is LOWER during the luteal phase (post-ovulation) when estrogen levels drop, and progesterone levels increase.

  • Key Observations To Note During Three Different Phases of Your Cycle

  • 1. Follicular Phase - Period Days (Typically Days 1 - 7)

    • Blood sugar management challenges?
    • Heavier bleeding?
    • Lighter or no bleeding despite calendar day and other typical symptoms?
  • 2. Late Follicular Phase (Day 8 to Day 14)

    • Notable changes in blood sugar levels?
    • Insulin sensitivity higher/lower?
    • Symptoms (e.g., increased energy, cravings)?
  • 3. Ovulation to Luteal Phase (Day 14 to Day 28)

    • Blood sugar stability?
    • Increased insulin resistance?
    • Symptoms (e.g., bloating, fatique)?
