Help Disability support workers better understand how to support Neurodivergent and people with a disability from Intersectional Communities by sharing your experience.
We will share what we learn as part of our presentation at the Cairns Disability Support Worker Conference on June 16th.
Who Can Participate:
people from intersectional communities who identify as
- Neurodivergent
- A person with a disability
- A carer of someone a neurodivergent individual or person with a disability
What is Intersectionality?
Intersectionality is how various marginalised identities overlap to create a unique, compounded experience of discrimination.
For example, people who have a disability and are LGBTQIA+ often find it challenging to access a GP who can accommodate them fully due to harmful misconceptions and stereotypes. Many people from this intersectional community often describe this struggle as if they have to choose which part of themself has the privilege to be out in the world for the day and which one has to be non-existent.
This experience becomes more compounded when you need to rely on the assistance of a support worker to assist you in your most private and intimate moments.
