Help Disability support workers better understand how to support Neurodivergent and people with a disability from Intersectional Communities by sharing your experience.
We will share what we learn as part of our presentation at the Cairns Disability Support Worker Conference on June 16th.
What is Intersectionality?
Intersectionality refers to the experience of how various marginalised social identities and factors can overlap to create a unique, compounded experience of discrimination.
Intersectionality of disability refers to the recognition that disability does not exist in isolation but often interacts with other social identities and factors such as race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. It acknowledges that people with disability can experience unique forms of discrimination and barriers that arise from the intersection of multiple identities.
For example, people who have a disability and are LGBTQIA+ often find it challenging to access a GP who can accommodate them fully due to harmful misconceptions and stereotypes. Many people from this intersectional community often find that they have to hide or neglect part of their identity in order to access services such as a GP.
This experience becomes more compounded when you need to rely on the assistance of a support worker to assist you in your most private and intimate moments, where you don't want to or can't hide who you are.
Who Can Participate:
people from intersectional communities who identify as
- Neurodivergent
- A person with a disability
- A carer of a neurodivergent individual or person with a disability
