ABOUT THE ROLE
Ngāti Ōtara Marae is looking for a Health & Safety Custodian to help ensure our marae is a safe, well-maintained, and welcoming space for all.
This role is about more than just maintenance — it is about kaitiakitanga. You will help uphold the safety, wellbeing, and mana of our marae, supporting whānau, hapori, and community groups to engage in a safe and respectful environment.
Grounded in kaupapa Māori, this role contributes to building stronger, safer, and more resilient communities in Ōtara.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Leading Health & Safety practices across the marae
- Carrying out regular safety checks of facilities and equipment
- Undertaking general maintenance and minor repairs, and coordinating external contractors where required
- Opening and closing the marae for bookings, ensuring spaces are safe, secure, and ready for use
- Supporting safe use of the marae for all bookings and activities
- Providing Health & Safety inductions for users and groups
- Maintaining incident reports, hazard registers, and safety documentation
- Supporting emergency preparedness and response planning
- Working alongside the Administrator Kaitiaki to ensure bookings are safely prepared and managed
PAY & HOURS
- $25 – $35 per hour (depending on experience)
- 12–15 hours per week (flexible)
- 3 Month Fixed-Term

You might bring:
- Experience in Health & Safety, facilities, or community-based work
- Maintenance, tools, problem-solving
- Ability to work with diverse communities
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with whānau, marae users, contractors, and committee members
- Understanding of tikanga Māori and marae environments
- A proactive, reliable, and solutions-focused mindset
