2027 American Traditions Competition Application Form
  • APPLY TO THE 34th ANNUAL ATC!

APPLY TO THE 34th ANNUAL ATC!

  • Thank you so much for applying to the American Traditions Vocal Competition, taking place from February 8 - 12, 2027. Fly in will be February 7 and fly out will be February 13! Please read all instructions carefully! As you fill out this application form, please be sure:

-All composers listed hold United States citizenship. We double check this, and so should you :)

    - Quarterfinal, Semifinal and Final live rounds use a pianist as a collaborator. One song in your total package of nine may be self-accompanied, but piano is the easiest transition. Each round is timed, so managing the length of your program is imperative.

    - All self-accompaniment instruments will be handled on a case-by-case basis and must be discussed with our Director, not assumed.

    - Each song in your total offering of nine songs must represent a different genre, and no genres can repeat. That means only one Musical Theatre out of nine, only one Jazz or Opera out of nine.

    - Please find alternative words to replace profanity in songs, as this is a family-oriented event with a wholesome atmosphere.

    - You are aware that our application deadline is Sunday, September 27 at midnight PST, (which means a short while after September 28 begins in EST).
    - While original music is allowed, only one song may be original in your full program of nine.

Additionally, please be aware that our Final Round offers each artist the option to add a bass player and a drummer, at no cost to the singer. The bass player works with and will bring both electric and upright bass. Contestants must be prepared with printed charts for each player, taped to avoid page turns, should they advance to the Final Round. We have a music director who can and will write proper charts for you, and will double check the charts you have. When in doubt, you should have your competition pianist double check for you.

In an effort for transparency, the ATC actively looks for singers who demonstrate strong intonation, posess a beautiful vocal tone, offer engaging and diverse programming and who are stylistically successful in these programming choices. Merely programming diverse offerings isn't the point of our competition - our contest is a celebration and exploration of all classic styles of American song.  We encourage you to listen deeply to different styles and artists.  If you like one song you've heard Ella Fitzgerald sing, you should listen to ten other arrangements by her contemporaries to get a true sense of style, not just a sense that you like Ms. Fitzgerald's arrangement. This is a competition where your artistry is required, your point of view is acknowledged and there are no bounds on programming based on other industry boxes.  We enourage you to have fun with it!

    Application fee schedule:

    April 15 - June 15, 2026 $25
    June 16 - August 15, 2026 $40

    August 16 - September 15, 2026 $55
    September 16 - September 27, 2026 $65

If you have questions about programming, general competition questions, composer questions, eligibility questions, or song recommendations, please reach out to Executive and Artistic Director Mikki Sodergren at director@atcsavannah.org. We are also on Facebook and Instagram (@atcsavannah) and are most happy to answer your questions!

The ATC actively seeks multi-genre singers from all backgrounds, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, status as an individual with a disability, protected veteran status, genetic information, or other protected classes under the law. All auditions are pre-screened by a panel of three music professionals who receive no identifying information about any applicants, in an effort to offer the most fair outcome.

  • Song Selections - Please Read.

  • Programming is an integral part of this competition. The songs you choose should "flow" programmatically, properly represent your voice and highlight different styles of music. Furthermore, all composers selected must hold U.S. Citizenship. The lyricists do not need to be U.S. Citizens. Your preliminary audio recordings should be of a good quality, without distortion (look out for PEAKING on the audio wave file), reverb or excess background noise (sometimes an issue with live recordings). Additionally, please ensure your recordings are recent and accurately reflect your singing. Please do not submit videos to us.

Our preliminary judges receive only your applicant number, your voice type, and your song selections and genres. Their decisions are made solely on the tone of your voice, your intonation, your dedication to the appropriate styles, and their own tastes and preferences as music professionals. You may use a professional recording, you may use a recording made with your phone, you may use a backing track from YouTube if you have no access to a pianist or other instrumentalist to work with. We just want to hear your voice in comfortable balance with the instrument to determine your sense of pitch, tone and style. A key part of this competition is playing to your vocal strengths, while showing musical and stylistic diversity within your set. Sometime folks group their "classical songs" together or their "jazz-y songs" together - this does not show the type of musical diversity within a set to get you noticed and move you forward. We encourage you to really go for it.

Many who find success in this competition have an ability for a vocal shift that maintains their vocal quality, while inhabiting another style. We are not seeking a "different voice," but a flexible instrument that can healthily and authentically perform a wide variety of styles - inhabiting appropriate use of vibrato, straight tone, and various resonators. Please keep this in mind while you select your programs.

Again, please reach out to director@atcsavannah.org with any questions!

  • Quarterfinal Round

    Quarterfinal Round

For this round, you will have a live time limit of 12 minutes, and the instrumentation you will perform with is piano. Please submit these selections in the order you would like to perform them, should you be invited to Savannah, Georgia to perform in the live competition. These selections are the exact same songs you will perform in the Quarterfinal Live Round. This round includes consideration for the specialty genre awards - Songs of Johnny Mercer, Opera, Musical Theatre, Spirituals and Jazz. While it is not required, if you choose to speak onstage, please keep banter between songs relevant and brief.

  • Semifinal Round

    Semifinal Round

This round has a live time limit of 14 minutes in programming time, and the instrumentation you will perform with is piano. No audio submission is necessary for this round, our preliminary judging is based only on the Quarterfinal Round programming. Please be sure this round's program is very strong. Many front runners from the Quarterfinal Round do not advance following the Semifinal Round, because they placed their "best" songs in the Quarterfinal and Final Rounds. We are here to tell you that this round needs to be amazing, too! From the group of twelve semifinalists, only five move to the Final Round. This round includes consideration for our specialty awards - Songs of Johnny Mercer, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Spirituals and Opera. While it is not required, if you choose to speak onstage, please keep banter between songs relevant and brief.
  • Final Round

    Final Round

For this round, you have a programming time limit of 16 minutes! This round is about having fun and putting on a great show. You will have access to a combo (drums and bass), if you wish to use them for your final set, at no additional cost to you. Please keep this in mind as you work on your programming. It is not required to use the combo for any or all of your songs - you may use them for just one, all three or none! However, if you wish to use them, you must have appropriate charts prepared for them, printed, taped and ready for your rehearsal. No special awards performances will be considered from this round. While it is not required, if you choose to speak onstage, please keep banter between songs relevant and brief.
