  • SMCSU is curently hiring students to appoint on the two highest governing bodies at USMC; the USMC Senate and Collegium. Appointed students will represent the SMC students' voice and interests to the St. Michaels College administration while playing a crucial role in the USMC decision making. Below, are the descriptions of the two councils:

    The Collegium is the principal of two bodies that govern the affairs of the University of St. Michael’s College. Its members work to safeguard the property and funds of the University, and ensure that it has the resources to carry out its mission while operating in accordance with the best academic practices and the governing law. This position is a 2 year commitment. The first year of the appointment grants the undergraduate student a voice at Collegium, but no vote. The second year of the appointment grants the student full-status as a voting Collegium member

    The Senate is the second of two bodies that govern the affairs of the University of St. Michael’s College. Its responsibilities concern academic matters, including the power to establish and regulate faculty councils, and it has the exclusive power to grant degrees and award diplomas and certificates within the University. The Senate also advises the Collegium on all academic and educational matters. This position is a 1 year commitment. 

    Applications close on Friday, April 10th, 2026 @ 12:00pm (Noon). Interviews will be held on a rolling basis, meaning we will interview applicants as they apply.

  • USMC Collegium

  • The USMC Collegium is the primary of the highest governing bodies at SMC. This position will provide the students with the full experience of being a board member at a young age. As a member of the collegium, you will engage fully in the responsibilities and mindset of a board member. This role requires you to immerse yourself in the decision-making process, adopting the perspective necessary to make informed and strategic decisions for the university. Some board decision making activities include but are not limited to; setting the university’s strategic plan, setting and approving the USMC annual budget, and working on high level university policies.

    Confidentiality is crucial in this role. You will handle highly sensitive information and sign contracts that require discretion and trustworthiness. Although you may have valid concerns as a student, your decisions must go beyond individual interests, focusing instead on the broader needs of current and future students, faculty, staff, and the university as a whole.

    Serving on the board is one of the most influential roles at the university, offering a unique opportunity to incorporate the student perspective into high-level discussions among the university administration. However, this comes with the challenge of ensuring your decisions remain unbiased and benefit the entire university. Your holistic approach will contribute significantly to shaping the university’s future.

    Time Commitment:

    The USMC Collegium will be holding 4 mandatory meetings for the year, 2 per semester. These meetings will be approximately 2 hours, typically happening on Wednesday afternoons or evenings between 3-5pm. The mandatory in-person retreat will be happening on Thursday, September 17th, 2026 from 3-9 3:00pm-9:00pm. In addition to the actual meeting times, board members are expected to review agenda items before the meetings to make informed decisions. This preparatory review takes up around 3-4 hours before every meeting. Below is the current schedule for the Collegium Meetings for 2026-27:

    • October 7, 2026 (AGM, first regular meeting, dinner)
    • December 9, 2026
    • March 10, 2027
    • June 9, 2027
  • I,   *   *, understand that the USMC Collegium position is a 2 year commitment. The first year of the appointment grants me a voice at the Collegium, but no vote. The second year of the appointment grants full status as a voting Collegium member. I also understand that I must attend the mandatory meeting dates and the training retreat for Collegium Members.

  • USMC Senate

  • The Senate is the second of two bodies that govern the affairs of the University of St. Michael’s College. This board is responsible for the academic matters at USMC including but not limited to the faculty and students. Its composed of the highest levels of administration at USMC including the President, Principal, Registrar, Bursar, Collegium Members, and the Chief Librarian. It has the special power to grant degrees,diplomas and certifications to students and is the main advisor to the USMC Collegium on all educational and academic matters. Confidentiality is crucial in this role. You will handle highly sensitive information and sign contracts that require discretion and trustworthiness.

    Serving on the board is one of the most influential roles at the university, offering a unique opportunity to incorporate the student perspective into high-level discussions among the university administration.

    Time Commitment:

    The Senate meets twice a year; once per semester. The meetings are generally 2 hours on Mondays between 4-6pm. In addition to the actual meeting times, board members are expected to review agenda items before the meetings to make informed decisions. This preparatory review takes up around 2-4 hours before every meeting. Below is the current schedule for the Senate Meetings for 2026-27: 

    • October 19, 2026 
    • March 22 or 15, 2027
  • I,   *   *, understand that the USMC Senate position is a 1 year commitment. Being a Senate board member gives me a voice and a vote at the Senate meetings and discussions. I also understand that I must attend the mandatory meeting dates for All Senate members.
