  • The Sun Peaks Mountain Academy (SPMA) is operated by the non-profit Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) and offers an innovative blended learning model to students in Grades 10 through 12 in a unique mountain setting. The SPES values educational excellence, global stewardship and healthy outdoor lifestyles. This community driven educational program offers a public education in a private setting. School District 73 Kamloops Open Online Learning @KOOL offers the B.C curriculum supported by @Kool teaching staff and the Sun Peaks Education Society’s classroom facilitator teacher(s).

  • As part of the SPMA Application Process, all prospective students and a parent/guardian must read the Student Handbook & Policies 2026/2027, which is available via a link in the applications procedures on the SPMA website. In signing below, the prospective student and parent/guardian have agreed to abide by the policies and code of conduct described in this document.

  • The Sun Peaks Mountain Academy partners with SD73 @KOOL as our distance learning education provider. Prior to acceptance to Sun Peaks Mountain Academy, students must be registered with @Kool. The @KOOL registration information may be found on the @KOOL website at www.sd73.bc.ca/kool or via the link provided on the SPMA Admissions page.*
  • RELEASE AND ASSUMPTION OF RISKS

  • To: The Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) and its directors, employees, servants, agents, volunteers, contractors,suppliers, successors, and assigns (all of whom are hereinafter referred to as the "Releasees")

  • I am aware that attending the Sun Peaks Mountain Academy (SPMA) and participating in SPSA organized activities may involve inherent risks, dangers and hazards including but not limited to:

  • 1. The risks and hazards inherent during recreational activities such as Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, running,mountain biking, cycling, tubing, swimming, canoeing, paddle sports, skating, team sports, and other activities including: ice, snow, water, uneven terrain, slips trips and falls, cold and other extremes of weather, collision with stationary or moving objects, contact with equipment such as nets, posts, balls, pucks, sticks and racquets, actions of other participants, excessive physical exertion, and unpredictable wildlife;
  • 2. The risks and hazards inherent during Alpine skiing/snowboarding including: boarding, riding and disembarking ski lifts; changing weather conditions; avalanches; exposed rock, earth, ice, and other natural objects; trees, treewells, tree stumps and forest dead fall; the condition of snow or ice on or beneath the surface; variations in the terrain or weather conditions which may create blind spots or areas of reduced visibility; variations in the surface or sub-surface, including changes due to man-made or artificial snow; variable and difficult conditions; streams, creeks, and exposed holes in the snow pack above streams or creeks; cliffs; crevasses; snowcat roads,road-banks or cut-banks; loose gravel and rocks; constructed obstacles and features such as bridges, ramps, ladders, bumps, berms, jumps, and drops; collision with lift towers, fences, snow making equipment, snowgrooming equipment, snowcats, snowmobiles or other vehicles, equipment or structures; impact or collision with trees, tree stumps, dead fall, rocks and other natural or constructed objects or hazards; collision with other participants; mechanical failure of equipment; high speed descents; loss of balance or control; slips, trips and falls; difficulty or inability to control one's speed and direction; rapid or uncontrolled acceleration on hills and inclines; encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife; the failure to act safely or within one's own ability or to stay within designated areas;
  • 3. Transportation risks and hazards including: being a passenger or driver in a motor vehicle accident or collision;
  • 4. Classroom risks and hazards including: trips and falls, sharp objects, tools, science materials and apparatus,electronic equipment, malfunctioning fixtures or equipment, and the actions of other students; and
  • 5. NEGLIGENCE ON THE PART OF THE RELEASEES. I UNDERSTAND THAT NEGLIGENCE INCLUDES FAILURE ON THEPART OF THE RELEASEES TO TAKE REASONABLE STEPS TO SAFEGUARD OR PROTECT ME FROM THE RISKS,DANGERS AND HAZARDS REFERRED TO ABOVE.
  • RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT

  • In consideration of the Releasee allowing me to enroll in the SPMA and participate in the programming and activities of the SPMA, I hereby agree as follows:

  • 1. TO WAIVE ANY AND ALL CLAIMS that I have or may in the future have against THE RELEASEES, and TO RELEASE THE RELEASEES from any and all liability for any loss, damage, expense or injury including death that I may suffer, or that my next of kin may suffer resulting from either my attendance at the SPMA or my participation in SPMA programming and activities, DUE TO ANY CAUSE WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE, BREACH OF CONTRACT, OR BREACH OF ANY STATUTORY OR OTHER DUTY OF CARE ON THE PART OF THE RELEASEES. I UNDERSTAND THAT

  • NEGLIGENCE INCLUDES FAILURE ON THE PART OF THE RELEASEES TO TAKE REASONABLE STEPS TO SAFEGUARD OR PROTECT ME FROM THE RISKS, DANGERS AND HAZARDS REFERRED TO ABOVE;
  • 2. TO HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNIFY THE RELEASEES from any and all liability for any damage to property of or personal injury to any third party, resulting from my attendance at the SPSA or my participation in SPSA programming and activities;
  • 3. This Release Agreement shall be effective and binding upon my heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators, assigns and representatives, in the event of my death or incapacity;
  • 4. This Release Agreement and any rights, duties and obligations as between the parties to this Release Agreement shall be governed by and interpreted solely in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and no other jurisdiction; and 5. Any litigation involving the parties to this Release Agreement shall be brought solely within the Province of British Columbia, and shall be within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Province of British Columbia. In entering into this Release Agreement I am not relying upon any oral or written representations or statements made by the Releasees with respect to the safety of attending the SPSA other than what is set forth in this Agreement.
  • I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS RELEASE AGREEMENT AND I AM AWARE THAT BY ELECTRONICALLY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT I AM WAIVING CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS WHICH I OR MY HEIRS, NEXT OF KIN, EXECUTORS, ADMINISTRATORS, ASSIGNS AND REPRESENTATIVES MAY HAVE AGAINST THE RELEASEES.
  • BY SIGNING THIS DOCUMENT YOU WAIVE CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO SUE. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
  • Student Facility Fees and Volunteer

  • The Sun Peaks Mountain Academy is operated by the Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES), a local charitable organization committed to providing quality community based education. Funds raised are to cover costs of operating the Sun Peaks Secondary Academy which are not funded by SD73 @KOOL. In addition, a capital fund raising campaign is underway to provide enhanced education/community facilities. The SPES and Sun Peaks Mountain Academy (SPMA) could not operate without the dedicated work of community volunteers including students and parents. Thank you for volunteering!

  • Most costs not covered by SD73 and the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality are currently covered by parent/student driven fund raising within the community. To ensure quality programming for students, fees for enrichment activities and additional educational programming may be required and will be communicated prior to the start of each semester.

  • For the 2026/2027 school year the $750.00 Facilities Fee will be reinstated. This annual fee of $750.00 per student is intended to support the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of our school facilities as well as enrichment activities and programming.

    Facilities Fee Payment Schedule

    First Installment: $250.00 due upon application (non refundable)

    Second Instalment: $250.00 due by September 1st, 2026

    Third Installment: $250.00 due by January 3rd, 2027

    *The Sun Peaks Education Society is committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent students from registering or attending the Sun Peaks Mountain Academy.   • Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) Membership Requirement

  •  The Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) is a non profit society which was established in 2010 to advocate for and support educational initiatives in the community of Sun Peaks. The Sun Peaks Mountain Academy (SPMA) is operated by the SPES and is supported by its members fundraising and community service. 

    At least one parent/guardian of student(s) must be a member in good standing of the Sun Peaks Education Society (SPES) for the school year of attendance. To become a member of the SPES, please follow the directions below.

  • Student/Family Volunteer Requirements

    All students and parents/guardians are required to contribute, at minimum, 25 volunteer hours by assisting with community and/or SPES fundraisers. Details about volunteer opportunities, hours reporting, and potential financial penalties for not fulfilling volunteering requirements will be provided at the beginning of the school year.
