    Assessing Deaf Children’s Language: Train-the-Trainer

The National ASL & English Bilingual Consortium for Early Childhood Education (NASLECE) is pleased to offer an intensive 50+ hour Train-the-Trainer program designed for mentors and professionals working with Deaf children ages 0–5. This program prepares participants to assess, monitor, and support early language development using a variety of assessment tools. Successful completion leads to national certification.

This training addresses the critical need for early, accurate language assessment to prevent language deprivation among Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, and non-verbal children. Participants will gain both foundational knowledge and advanced skills to support language development and train others in their communities.

    What You Will Learn
Level 1 will serve as a comprehensive introduction and refresher for the assessments, ensuring everyone is aligned on administration and scoring protocols.
Level 2 will then build on that foundation, focusing on 'Trainer Excellence.' This section will cover advanced report writing, case study development, and effective mentorship and certification of new evaluators in the field. This dual-level approach ensures that participants don't just know the assessments—they know how to lead them.

    Learning Outcomes
By the end of this program, as a team, we will be able to:

    1. Assess Deaf children’s language development using VCSL and other ASL-based assessment tools.
    2. Analyze and interpret language data to inform instructional and intervention decisions.
    3. Apply ASL linguistic knowledge to evaluate language milestones and identify delays.
    4. Design and deliver training for professionals and families using a strengths-based, culturally responsive approach.
    5. Support early intervention and educational systems by promoting consistent language monitoring and equitable language outcomes.

    Registration Requirements:

    • Submit a brief CV detailing your job title/position.
    • Provide evidence of ASL proficiency (e.g., ASLPI Score 4.0 or equivalent).
    • Applicants who do not meet the requirements will be reimbursed if not approved.
