    How the Program Works

In each intensive 5 – day session, Students will plan and produce their films using industry standard digital cinema cameras, lights, greenscreens, and robotic camera tools. Each participant will cycle through diffrent roles — director, camera operator, sound, and talent — so everyone gets experience in front of and behind the camera. After production is completed, students will learn industry-standard editing software the pros use to assemble their films, create compelling sound design, mix music tracks, color correction, and adding special effects to their films. Each day is five hours long, giving these filmakers the time they need to dream big, and gain experience in every aspect of filmmaking.

THE YFP filmmakers wiill create short films as individual groups, but also participate in the filming and acting in other groups’ project as well.  Filmmakers will write scripts, create costumes, and film their projects in our studio, and nearby locations.

This is a “Group-Based” Program with each group of filmmakers responsible for various aspects of the filmmaking process. These groups will be mixed ages/genders. Students will have the opportunity to perform multiple jobs during the production of their films. The more they want to learn and participate in other groups’ films, the more they will benefit from this program.

While each student will be able to pitch their film idea, the studio cannot “greenlight” every film. If your student’s film idea isn’t picked, they will be encouraged to fill a leadership role on a film team that most aligns with their interests. We expect their creativity and enthusiasm to enrich whatever film they are working on!

Finally, the Summer program participants will share their creations with the community at a special YFP Film Screening that you can invite your friends and family to attend! Plus, these Summer films will be screened again at our next RED CARPET YFP FILM FESTIVAL, and may be entered into other film festivals around the USA!

    Parent Participation

Our program relies on collaboration and partnership with the families and communities of our student filmmakers. The YFP will provide the equipment, guidance, and studio space for filming, but it will be up to parents to help their filmmakers’ team acquire costumes, props, and locations for their film projects.

If needed, Parents should also be available to drive their students to off-site locations. Students may need assistance at home to help write their script, access google docs, rehearse their lines, make/find costumes/props, and facilitate group communication between students/parents.

During class hours, supervised student groups may be filming in the surrounding area near the studio. This could include city sidewalks, courthouse plaza, alleyways, parking lots, recording studios, playhouses, local businesses, restaurants, music venues, or stores.

    Filmmaking is “problem-solving”

Students will need to be able to compromise, adjust their creative vision, and incorporate other people’s ideas as a result of real-world filming logistics or creative studio guidance. Students are expected to be respectful, cooperative, participate in the filming activities, find ways to contribute, come to class/set prepared, and be able to complete tasks with or without direct supervision.

    Code of Conduct

Discipline problems, refusal to participate, roughhousing, bullying, malicious destruction of property, and verbal or physical threats will not be tolerated. The YFP reserves the right to expel a student at any time, for any reason.
