  • Volunteer Description

  • Serving as a Long-Term Volunteer (LTV) is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of Tijuana and better understand the complex issues surrounding the border region, develop leadership skills, work towards social justice, and exemplify global citizenship. LTVs with Esperanza serve for a period of 3 to 12 months. Their main duty is to be a leader by helping make positive connections between and with the groups and community members in Esperanza's home building program. LTVs work closely with people of all backgrounds and cultures. They live in Tijuana, Mexico at La Posada, volunteer, and receive a stipend.

  • Their main roles are to:

    • Receive volunteer groups when they arrive, and introduce them to La Posada
    • Help teach groups and organize them at work sites
    • Help groups make connections with the families
    • Accompany groups to extra activities that enrich their experience in Tijuana
    • Help translate between groups, community members, and staff
    • Help solve conflict, if any, between groups
    • Support staff by doing administrative tasks
  • Requirements

    • Length: 3 months-1 year
    • Age 21+
    • Be able to live and work in Tijuana, Mexico and get a visa if necessary
    • Be able to lift 25 pounds
    • Speak at least 50 percent Spanish, and be willing to learn more in order to communicate with community members and staff
    • Pass a background check
    • Be able to do conflict management, problem solve, and delegate
    • Be flexible and quickly adapt to changing daily scenarios
    • Be open to sharing their story, open their heart, and connect with everyone
    • Have a desire to lead and build community
    • Have basic computer skills, may assist around the office
    • Have good communication and verbal skills
