    Equipment Operator Job Description

Equipment Operator Foreman - Excavation & Site Work

    Full-Time | Long-Term | Commercial Construction

Zimmerman Building Company is seeking an experienced and motivated Union Equipment Operator Foreman with advanced skills in excavation and site work using small to medium-sized excavators and other equipment earth moving equipment. This is a working foreman position—we are looking for a leader who is just as comfortable in the seat of a machine as they are in the trench alongside their crew.

This role requires someone who leads by example, stays hands-on, and is committed to keeping projects moving by doing whatever it takes—operating, laboring, coordinating, and problem-solving in real time.

    Benefits Include:

    • Competitive wages based on classification and experience
    • Vacation pay
    • Company provided service truck upon completion of training and leading independent crews

    Key Responsibilities

    • Operate small to medium excavators with a high level of precision for:
      o Footings and foundation excavation
o Utility trenching (water, sewer, storm, electric)
      o Rough and finish grading
      o Drainage and site development
    • Lead, direct, and work alongside field crews, including laborers, operators, and subcontractors.
    • Act as a true working foreman—regularly stepping out of the machine to assist with:
      o Pipe installation
      o Trench work
      o Grade checking
o General labor as needed to maintain productivity
    • Interpret and execute construction plans, grades, and site layouts, ensuring all work meets specifications.
    • Oversee daily site operations, including task sequencing, crew coordination, and production goals.
    • Ensure accurate grade control, working with lasers, grade stakes, and plans.
    • Maintain strict adherence to jobsite safety, including trench safety, OSHA standards, and company policies.
    • Communicate effectively with project managers, superintendents, inspectors, and crews.
    • Coordinate trucking, materials, and site logistics to keep workflow efficient.
    • Perform and oversee equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
    • Identify and resolve field challenges quickly to keep projects on schedule.
      ________________________________________

    Requirements

    • Minimum of 5–7+ years of excavation experience, including significant time operating small to mid-size excavators.
    • Proven experience in a lead or foreman role on excavation/site work projects.
    • Strong expertise in precision excavation, trenching, grading, and utilities.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grading plans, and utility drawings.
    • Experience with grade control tools (lasers, transits; GPS a plus).
    • Strong understanding of safe excavation practices, including trench protection.
    • Team-first mindset with a willingness to work hands-on alongside the crew—not just supervise.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to keep crews productive and projects moving in a fast-paced environment.
    • Valid driver’s license required; CDL strongly preferred.
    • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and maintain a drug-free work environment.
    • Must be willing and able to join Local 18 union (if not currently a member).
