Hadestown: Teen Edition – Character Descriptions (Ages 12–18)

    Orpheus
A hopeful, imaginative musician with a big heart. Orpheus believes deeply in love and the power of his music to change the world. He can be a bit naïve and lost in his own thoughts, but his sincerity is what makes him special.
    Vibe: Dreamer, gentle, earnest
Vocal: Strong singer with a light, lyrical tone (tenor range)

    Eurydice
Practical, independent, and a survivor. Eurydice is wary of trusting others because life has been hard, but she longs for safety and belonging. Her journey is about learning to trust and take a leap of faith.
    Vibe: Grounded, guarded, strong
Vocal: Expressive singer with emotional depth (alto/mezzo)

    Hermes
The storyteller and guide of the show. Hermes is charismatic, witty, and warm—like a mentor who keeps the story moving. They connect with the audience and the characters, balancing humor with wisdom.
    Vibe: Confident, smooth, playful narrator
Vocal: Strong storyteller singer with rhythm and personality.  Can be male or female.

    Hades
The powerful ruler of the underworld. Hades is intimidating and controlling, but beneath that is a character driven by fear of loss. This role explores both authority and vulnerability.
    Vibe: Commanding, intense, layered
Vocal: Deep, resonant voice (baritone/bass feel)

    Persephone
The Queen of the Underworld who brings light into darkness. Persephone is bold, free-spirited, and a bit rebellious. She struggles between two worlds—above and below—and brings humor and heart to the story.
Vibe: Spirited, expressive, a little wild
Vocal: Big personality voice with soul and edge (mezzo/belt)

    The Fates (3 performers)
A trio that represents inner thoughts, doubt, and destiny. They move and sing as one unit, often guiding or challenging the characters—especially Eurydice.
    Vibe: Mysterious, synchronized, sharp
Vocal: Tight harmonies; strong ensemble singers

    Workers (Ensemble)
The heart of Hadestown. These performers create the world through movement, rhythm, and unified energy. They transform into townspeople, spirits, and laborers in the underworld.
Vibe: Physical, rhythmic, committed ensemble players
Vocal: Ensemble singing; ability to blend and move well is key

  • Storyline:

Hadestown: Teen Edition is a captivating folk opera that intertwines two timeless mythological tales—young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the powerful King Hades and his wife Persephone—into a haunting and deeply human story about love, hope, and sacrifice.

Set in a stylized, industrial underworld, the show follows Eurydice as she is drawn into Hadestown, a factory-like realm where workers toil endlessly, separated from the warmth and freedom of the world above. When Orpheus, a gifted musician, sets out on a daring journey to rescue her, he must rely on the power of his song to challenge the forces that keep her trapped below.

With a rich, soulful score inspired by New Orleans jazz, blues, and American folk traditions, Hadestown explores themes of trust, resilience, and the cost of doubt. Narrated by the charismatic Hermes, the story reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is always a song worth singing—and a reason to try again.
