I acknowledge that participating in pottery classes, workshops, and open studio sessions at Formed & Found involves inherent risks. These risks include, but are not limited to:

    • Physical injury from the use of potter’s wheels, slab rollers, extruders, and other specialized studio equipment.

  • Formed & Found: Studio Safety Rules

    1. General Studio Conduct & Apparel

Appropriate Footwear: Closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles are strictly required at all times. Sandals or bare feet are not permitted.

Clothing & Hair: Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Long hair must be securely tied back, and dangling jewelry or loose clothing must be removed before operating any equipment.

    2. Dust Management & Cleanup (Silica Safety)

Wet Clean Only: Never sweep dry clay or use standard vacuums, as this kicks hazardous silica dust into the air. Always use wet sponges and mops for cleaning surfaces and floors.

Clean As You Go: Thoroughly wipe down your workspace, tools, and the splash pans of the pottery wheels immediately after use.

Sanding: Dry sanding of greenware or bisqueware is not permitted in the main studio. All sanding must be done outdoors or over a bucket of water to capture dust.

    3. Equipment Safety

Wheel Operation: Ensure the wheel is turned off and the foot pedal is cleared before sitting down or standing up. Do not leave wheels running unattended.

Kiln Room Access: The kiln area is strictly off-limits to students. Only authorized staff may load, unload, or operate the kiln.

Hazardous Materials: All specialty materials, including specific metallic oxides or epoxy and gold powder used for Kintsugi, must be handled according to instructor guidelines using proper ventilation and PPE (masks/gloves).

    4. Emergency & First Aid Protocols

First Aid Station: A fully stocked first aid kit is located in the studio bathroom.

Injury Reporting: All injuries, regardless of severity—including minor lacerations from trimming tools, wire cutters, or minor thermal burns—must be immediately reported to the instructor on duty for proper wound care, documentation, and infection prevention.

Eye Wash: If clay splatter or glaze enters the eye, proceed immediately to the bathroom sink and flush eye continuously for 15 minutes.

    5. Payment, Cancellation, and Makeup Policy

Payment is due before the beginning of the first class.  Cancellation notices to Formed & Found must be given within 24 hours of the scheduled class.  One makeup class is available per 6-week session.  Formed & Found reserves the right to cancel the class(es) due to low enrollment or class scheduling limitations.
