Ripe for Repair: Darning Workshop

Interested in repair and want to build skills? Join us to learn the entry-level textile repair technique of darning. You will be introduced to the basics with a guided tutorial and opportunity to practice. This is a great workshop for folks who are new to sewing or wanting to build skills and build confidence. This is our first ever workshop to complement our monthly repair meetups.

What is darning? Darning is a method of mending in which holes or worn areas of fabric are patched by weaving thread or yarn over it. It is a "visible" mending technique.

What to bring: If you're able, bring a garment with a hole or area worn thin smaller than 2 inches. We will provide the thread/yarn and needles to fix it if you don't have supplies. If you don't have a garment to bring, we will have fabric for you to practice on.

We love working with multi-generational groups! This event is open to kids age 8+ if they have a responsible adult with them. Please fill out a registration for both the youth attendee and the adult attendee. We expect all attendees would be able to be responsible with shared sewing tools, focus during short demos, and work independently at times.

Optional: What item are you bringing to darn?
We will have fabric to practice on, but we encourage you to bring something you'd like to darn! If you have something in mind, please tell us about it so we can make sure we have the right supplies. Good options include holes smaller than 2" on a sock, sweater, shirt, or hat, or a frayed cuff. We'll follow up with you before the event to make sure we have the right supplies available, so you'll have a chance to share this information later, too.

The workshop will be held in the Community Room of the East End Community School, at 195 North St in Portland. The school is wheelchair accessible, on the #1 METRO bus, and there's plenty of parking on site.
