Background
All members/associates of the Highland Park Lawn Bowling Club (HPLBC, "the Club") are registered through the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA). The OLBA provides the insurance, etc. to local clubs and provides management of the competitive part of the sport like tournaments, rankings, etc. This lowers expenses for local clubs like HPLBC and makes it very affordable for individuals who just want to have a fun outdoor activity during the summer months.
We provide local day-long tournaments and leagues at just the club level for those who love a bit of competition but do not want to get into the more inter-club competitive level. In addition, we provide several "jitney" playing times throughout the week. This is a much loved program by members because you do not have to make a commitment and just show up at the clubhouse... there is a methodology to form various size teams so that everyone can participate. PURE FUN.
In addition to becoming a PLAYING MEMBER (includes voting privileges at the AGM), we have SOCIAL MEMBERSHIPS (join our social activities/make friends/etc. without play).
To enter into the OLBA system, for each person using our greens, we need your name, a telephone #, a postal code and your date of birth. The date of birth is an essential requirement for the insurance company and, once entered, is blocked from being included in any report or transmission. Some people have been known to enter a 'phoney' birthdate but please note that this would invalidate any insurance coverage.
Because of the required liability waiver, this means that you need the OLBA-provided insurance coverage to make any claims due to an accident, etc. while bowling.
OLBA / HPLBC Liability Waiver
Please read the full Ontario Lawn Bowls Association - Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims and Indemnity Agreement here (https://highlandparklawnbowling.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/OLBA_HPLBC_Waiver_2025ol.pdf). Having read and understoood and agreed to be bound by its terms is necessary to the terms of HPLBC membership. Here is a summary of that waiver:
This waiver is a legally binding agreement required to participate in lawn bowling activities organized by the Ontario Lawn Bowls Association and related organizations. By signing, participants (or guardians) confirm they understand the nature of the activities and voluntarily accept all associated risks. These risks include physical injury (up to serious injury or death), equipment failure, unsafe conditions, illness (including COVID-19), and potential errors or negligence by the organization. Participants also confirm they are physically and mentally fit, will follow rules, and will take responsibility for their own safety and decisions during participation.
In signing the waiver, participants give up their right to sue the organization for any injury, loss, or damage, even if caused by the organization’s negligence. They agree to fully assume all risks, release the organization from liability, and indemnify (protect) it from related claims. The agreement also covers property damage, illness, and legal claims, and specifies that any disputes must be handled under Ontario law.
Key Points:
- Participation is voluntary and requires accepting all inherent risks
- Risks include injury, illness (including COVID-19), equipment issues, and environmental hazards
- The organization is not liable, even in cases of negligence
- Participants must ensure their own fitness, safety, and proper use of equipment
- Participants agree to follow rules and remove themselves from unsafe situations
- All legal claims against the organization are waived and released
- Participants indemnify the organization against claims arising from their participation
- Ontario law governs the agreement and any legal disputes
