Thank you for choosing Simple Steps Tax Services to assist you with your tax preparation needs. This letter outlines the terms of our engagement and defines the scope and limitations of the services we will provide.
Scope of Services
Simple Steps Tax Services will prepare your requested federal and applicable state income tax returns for the specified tax year(s) based solely on the information you provide.
To ensure accurate and complete preparation, you agree to furnish all required documents, records, and disclosures necessary for the preparation of your tax return. While we may ask questions or request clarification regarding certain items, we do not audit, examine, or independently verify the information you submit.
Our engagement includes accounting services only as they relate directly to tax return preparation. This engagement does not include auditing, assurance, forensic accounting, or fraud detection services. However, if we identify information that appears incorrect, inconsistent, or incomplete, we will notify you and request clarification before proceeding.
Client Responsibilities
By engaging our services, you acknowledge and agree that:
All information provided to Simple Steps Tax Services is accurate, complete, and truthful to the best of your knowledge.
You are solely responsible for maintaining adequate documentation and records to substantiate income, deductions, credits, and other items reported on your tax return.
You understand that knowingly providing false or misleading information may result in serious penalties, including interest, fines, restitution, audits, legal proceedings, and possible criminal prosecution.
You further agree to hold Simple Steps Tax Services harmless from any penalties, interest, or additional taxes assessed as a result of incorrect, incomplete, or omitted information supplied by you.
By signing this agreement, you authorize Simple Steps Tax Services to prepare and file your tax return based on the information you provide.
Payment Terms and Fees
Tax preparation fees are due at the time services are rendered. Fees are charged for professional services provided and are not contingent upon the receipt of a tax refund.
If you or your spouse owe federal or state debts—including but not limited to IRS liabilities, child support, student loans, or other government obligations—you remain fully responsible for all agreed-upon preparation fees, regardless of refund offsets, delays, or reductions.
Delays caused by the IRS, state agencies, or other third parties do not relieve you of payment obligations. Unpaid balances may result in collection efforts or legal action. Clients agree not to dispute charges due to refund delays or government processing issues.
Invoices are due upon presentation.
Records Retention
Your original documents will be returned to you at the conclusion of our engagement. You are advised to securely retain all tax records, supporting documentation, and canceled checks for your records in accordance with IRS guidelines.
Simple Steps Tax Services will retain copies of your tax return and related documents for three (3) years, after which they will be securely destroyed. Paper copies of tax returns are available upon request and may be subject to an additional fee.
Filing Process and Authorization
Our engagement concludes upon delivery of your completed tax return, either for paper filing or upon your authorization for electronic filing (e-file).
If you elect not to e-file through our office, you assume full responsibility for timely and accurate submission of your tax return to the appropriate taxing authorities.
Before signing, you agree to carefully review your completed tax return. By signing this agreement, you:
Authorize Simple Steps Tax Services to prepare and file your tax return.
Consent to the use of your signature on applicable forms, including but not limited to Forms 1040, 8879, 7216, and any other required authorization forms.
Acknowledge that professional tax preparation services are not comparable to do-it-yourself tax software and that quoted fees reflect professional expertise and compliance responsibilities.
