  • At Groovekuttz Academy, commitment goes beyond learning how to cut hair — it’s about building a foundation for long-term personal growth, discipline, and purpose. This programme is designed to support individuals not only in developing barbering skills, but also in working on themselves through consistent mentoring, guidance, and self-reflection.

A strong focus is placed on cultural identity, encouraging tauira to understand where they come from and who they are. This includes learning and connecting with the pepeha of Manurewa, grounding each individual in their whakapapa and strengthening their sense of belonging and pride.

The programme runs four days a week over the course of a school term (10–11 weeks), with each day having a clear purpose:

Monday 9am – Theory: Learning about the structure of the head, different hair types, and growth patterns. This day also focuses on mindset and personal development to help sustain long-term employment and discipline.

Tuesday 9am – Community Cuts: Providing free barber services to the community, building confidence, communication skills, and real-world experience.

Wednesday 9am – Cultural Identity: Strengthening knowledge of identity, whakapapa, and connection to whenua through cultural learning.

Thursday 9am – Community Cuts: Continuing to serve the community while refining barbering skills in a practical setting.

This programme is commitment-based. Attendance, consistency, and respect for the kaupapa are essential. Unjustified absences may result in losing your place in the academy, as spaces are valued and intended for those who are fully dedicated to their journey.

Groovekuttz Academy is about growth in all areas — skill, self, and spirit — preparing individuals not just for a job, but for a better future.
