  • Cancer Connection Springfield Thrift Shop Retail/Marketing Intern

  • We are seeking an intern for 20 hours per week at our newly-opened (in May) Cancer Connection Thrift Shop in Springfield, MA. Cancer Connection is a nonprofit that provides free support groups, educational programming and integrative therapies (massage, reiki, acupuncture) for cancer patients and their caregivers.   • Our very popular Thrift Shop in Northampton gives all of their profits to support our services, and we are opening a new office and Thrift Shop in Springfield in May with the same model. The intern will work closely with the Thrift Shop manager to determine the best goods to appeal to the Springfield-area population, sort and redistribute donations, work on displays and marketing, and help in developing a social media presence for the organization. The intern would also meet regularly with the Executive Director to ensure organizational goals are being met.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong interest/background in merchandising, marketing, retail display, customer service and retail sales. An affinity for our mission is a plus.
  • The internship will be for twenty hours per week and run for ten weeks, between June 1 and August 28. Cancer Connection will provide a stipend.
  • Position Overview

  • We are seeking a detail-oriented undergraduate or graduate student to support a focused summer project involving retail systems, data collection and social media strategies for a new location of a nonprofit thrift shop.
  • The intern will:
    • Work with supervisor to receive, sort, and display goods, including setting up systems for intake and redistribution
    • Work with volunteers as needed
    • Track and organize donor, customer and volunteer data
    • Identify trends and areas for improvement, including making recommendations for marketing strategies
    • Work on social media for the shop and the greater organization
    • Present findings to leadership
  • Ideal Candidate

    • Coursework in retail, marketing, data analysis, social media
    • Strong research and organizational skills
    • Interest in nonprofit impact and/or small business operations
    • Self-motivated and detail-oriented
