• Imagining Trans Futures
A survey for trans health advocacy

Thank you for your interest in our Trans Health Futures survey.

This survey is to help the Trans Justice Project better understand the healthcare experiences, needs, and desires of trans and gender diverse community. Findings from this survey will be used to prepare a report on trans healthcare in Australia and to guide our work and advocacy in the coming years. This report will use quotes from this survey, so feel free to write about your experiences in any way that feels comfortable to you.

This survey will ask questions about your gender affirmation experiences and desires, barriers you have experienced, and how gender affirming care has affected your quality of life and wellbeing.

This survey is voluntary and should take 15-30 minutes to complete. All survey questions after this page are optional, and you can skip anything you don’t feel comfortable answering. At the end of the survey, you can also go into the draw for 1 of 6 $50 gift cards as a thank you for taking part.

You can also read the full Participant Information and Consent Form here.

  • Do you live in Australia, or have lived in Australia in the past 5 years?*
  • This is a survey for trans people of all genders, including trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and people who may use terms such as agender, Sistergirl, Brotherboy, Leiti, Fa'afafine, Fa'afatama, Hijra, Waria and more to describe themselves. Is this you?*
  • The following section is to understand a bit more about you and help us understand needs and desires among trans and gender diverse people across the continent.

No question from this point on in the survey is required, but any responses you do want to provide are anonymous and will be helpful.

  • Which of these terms most aligns with your gender?
  • Are you Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander?
  • How would you describe your cultural background?
  • Do you usually speak a language other than English at home?
  • Do you have a disability or a chronic illness, or are neurodivergent? For the purposes of this survey, we're interested in you answering how feels best to you, whether or not you have sought or had a formal diagnosis. (Tick any that apply)
  • Part of our advocacy is around affordability of health care. Because of this we're asking if any of the following have applied to you in the past 5 years? (Tick any that apply)
  • What State/Territory do you currently live in? If you do not have a place of residence, or are living outside Australia, please list the state where you have spent the most time in the past 5 years.
  • The following sections of the survey ask about your experiences and desires about gender affirming health care.

For any of the open text responses, please respond in whatever way feels good to you. The text from these responses may be included as anonymous quotes in future advocacy work, because we want to place the voices of trans people front and center.
