Kerry O'Brien Coaches Award
The U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee initiated a new award in 2008 with the goal of recognizing USMS coaches who are building our membership in communities throughout our country. Originally named the Grassroots Coaching Award, it has been renamed to honor Coach Kerry O'Brien of Walnut Creek Masters, who embodies the passion, dedication, and heart that these coaches bring to the pool deck. It is with the efforts of individuals like these that U.S. Masters Swimming will most certainly move to a greater level. The nomination deadline is July 1.

Nomination Criteria
The Kerry O'Brien Coaches Award has been created to recognize and thank USMS coaches who fall into any one of the five often over-looked categories listed below. Nominees for the award must be a current USMS Coach.
Describe how the coach has started from the ground up and created a new club or workout group, thus opening new opportunities for Masters swimmers in facilities that previously had no structured workouts for adults.
Building the Foundation
Detail how the coach has come into an existing club with a new energy and enthusiasm, taking it to new heights in membership. And how as a result of this individual, the program may boast a renewed level of participation in local open water or pool competitions and fitness events.
Reenergizing
How has this experienced coach taken time to share their expertise with a coach or coaches newer to the Masters venue? How has this individual demonstrated leadership outside of their own pool, by acting as a mentor with a less-experienced coach or another club?
Mentoring a new club
Describe how this coach has taken the extra step at the LMSC level to create coaching education opportunities. Included in this are coaches in an LMSC who open lines of communication within the LMSC and perhaps intra-LMSC for the betterment of USMS, its clubs, and its members.
Coaching Education at the local level
This is a coach who has successfully fueled new events for USMS members, including meets, open water swims, and/or clinics.
