Support Safer Streets in University City

Petition for safe and slow blocks between Spreckels Elementary and Standley Middle School on Governor Drive

This is a targeted safety improvement to lower from four vehicle lanes to two, with a dedicated bike lane, for the critical section between Standley Middle School ( Radcliff Dr.) and Spreckels Elementary School (Stadium St)  where hundreds of pedestrians and students cross daily to access our schools (Standley Middle School and Spreckels Elementary School), Standley Park, Swanson and Standley pools, and UC Little League baseball fields. This preserves 4 lanes on 80 percent of Governor Dr. 

We, the undersigned, support reconfiguring this school corridor from four vehicle lanes to two, with a dedicated bike lane. This will enhance community safety. It will:

• Protect Children: The entire stretch is a School Zone. Reducing lanes lowers speeds.
• Support Recreation: Adds a vital buffer for families at the park, pools, and fields.
• Keep Parking: This is achieved without removing street parking.
• Create Safer Crossings: Eliminates the dangerous "double-threat" pass when a pedestrian crosses.
• Barely Modify Time in Traffic. The City’s traffic study found traffic time to increase just 14 seconds during the busiest part of the day.
