History
In May 2013, FAP President Dr. Gary Altschuler proposed the establishment of an award to recognize an outstanding member of the Florida Association of Periodontists (FAP). The Executive Council approved the proposal, creating the Lifetime Achievement Award. The inaugural recipient, Dr. Samuel Low, was honored at the February 2014 FAP Business Meeting.Later in 2013, the award was renamed the Dr. Robert T. Ferris Award to recognize exceptional service to the FAP and distinguished contributions to the field of periodontology, including advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease.
Criteria
Nominees must demonstrate distinguished, long-term contributions to the FAP and the specialty of periodontology. Qualifications include:
- A minimum of 25 years of sustained contributions.
- Service in areas such as education (predoctoral or postdoctoral), community-based volunteer dental programs (domestic or international), continuing education, and/or scholarly publications.
- Leadership within the FAP and participation in organized dentistry, including the Florida Dental Association, Florida Board of Dentistry, and/or the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP).
- Status as an active, lifetime, or retired FAP member.
- Members of the FAP Executive Council and prior recipients of the award are not eligible.
