To: New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) 2 Broadway New York, NY 10004 And: NYS Senator Jabari Brisport NYS Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso NYC Council Member Chi Osse NYC Department of Transportation - Leroy Branch Re: Petition Requesting Removal of Bus Shelters and Benches on Franklin Avenue (West Side, Between Fulton Street and Lefferts Place) We, the Residents of the Brevoort-Franklin Block Association, are submitting this formal letter to the New York State MTA and to our elected officials - NYC Council Member Chi Osse, NYS Assembly Member Phara Souffrant Forrest, NYS Senator Jabari Brisport, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, and the NYC Department of Transportation (Leroy Branch) - along with collected signatures from residents, commuters, and local businesses. We request immediate action regarding the bus "shelters" and benches located on the west side of Franklin Avenue between Fulton Street and Lefferts Place, which serve the B48 and B49 bus lines. For an extended period, these "shelters" have been the site of persistent criminal, unsafe, and unsanitary activity, including physical assaults, open drug use, loitering unrelated to transit use, individuals sleeping under the "shelters", selling of various items and illicit substances, harassment of residents and passersby, and repeated use of the area as a bathroom, resulting in feces and urine on the sidewalks. Despite numerous complaints, enforcement or cleanup efforts have only resulted in temporary relief, with the same conditions returning shortly afterward. Many residents, including children and seniors, now feel unsafe walking past the shelters and often cross the street to avoid potential conflict. For these reasons, the Brevoort-Franklin Block Association respectfully requests that the MTA remove all bus "shelters" (canopies) and benches on this block, which serves the B48 and B49 transportation hub, as soon as possible. Attached is a petition with signatures from individuals who support this request. Sincerely, Residents of the Brevoort-Franklin Block Association
