• KōCreate: Civic Grants

  • Vibrant Hawaiʻi offers year-round civic grants to support residents across Hawaiʻi Island in bringing people together and taking action in their communities.

The mini-grant program provides small awards ranging from $50 to $1,000 to help residents launch simple, meaningful projects that build connection, support emergency preparedness, and create opportunities for people to gather, talk story, and identify shared priorities. Funding may be used for supplies, food, or other direct costs needed to make a community-led idea possible.

Examples of supported projects include creating neighborhood emergency phone trees or kōkua networks, organizing “check-on-a-neighbor” plans that strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster response, and coordinating efforts that support kūpuna, keiki, and neighbors who may need additional assistance during times of disruption. Projects may also include neighborhood clean-ups or small safety improvements that reduce hazards and strengthen readiness. Intergenerational gatherings that encourage storytelling and learning about the history and character of a place are also encouraged, helping neighbors deepen their connection to one another and to the communities they call home. Residents may also host potlucks or coffee hours that bring neighbors together to build relationships, identify neighborhood priorities, and launch community-led projects.
